I am applying for architecture for all my colleges and I can take either AP Art History or AP Chem. I have a few EC’s related to architecture. AP Art History is a more architecture related AP, but AP Chem is a lot more rigorous. Which one should I take?
Take what YOU find more interesting. I would argue neither has a huge relation to architecture. If it really is about where you go to college, and that is it then probably AP Chem. Many schools do not really care what major (barring business/engineering), and a more rigorous course load would in theory look better. But seriously, take what you want. It shouldn’t just be about college, college, college.
I’d go with Art History. More related to your area of interest and probably more interesting. Do NOT make choices solely for the purpose of what looks “good” to an adcom. What looks good is showing passion and interest, not merely ticking the boxes, and AP Art History is plenty rigorous.
As long as you have 3 labs sciences – Bio, Chem, and Physics – under your belt, you’re good to go. They certainly don’t need to be APs.
AP art history is hard and requires a lot of work. It’s also a lot of writing, more than the AP Englishes even though you are just looking at art. It requires you to over analyze works of art even though the artist clearly coneys one or two meanings that don’t require you to take a year long course to figure out. And with what you do learn has not real life application, unless you plan on majoring in art history which is stupid. In my opinion this class is a waste of time and you would be better off taking another AP class like AP Euro or even a non AP class it’s just that bad
@g12wyuw OP is hoping to become an architect so APAH has more relation to their major than AP Euro (a better suggestion would’ve been AP Calc with all the mathematics involved in architecture). Even if this was not the case, some people like to study and analyze art and to them it is not a “stupid” course or major. If it was stupid the College Board would have gotten rid of it by now. OP wasn’t asking for a course that was easier. They were asking specifically about APAH or AP Chem. One or the other. Not for their choices to be demeaned.
Art History majors have one of the highest acceptance rates to law school. Probably due to the amount of analysis and writing they have to do. So - stupid major? No.
My D17 took APAH last year and really enjoyed it. She intends to be a chem major so is in chem this year, but APAH was not a joke or waste of time.
APAH is extremely rigorous and IMO much more interesting than AP Chemistry. My son took both, got A’s and 5’s in both, and while he used his knowledge of chemistry more in college, his ability to knowledgeably appreciate art will last his lifetime.
