AP Art History

I am a homeschooling freshman planning to self-study for AP Art History, but due to scheduling errors, have only 6 months. I am a prolific reader but have basically no writing experience. How can I improve my writing skills enough to get a 5 on the AP Art History exam?

You’re not evaluated on your writing skills. You either know the piece of art and can write sentences in English describing the artist, location, period, etc., or you can’t.

…agree, and adding that AP Art Hx has a heavy data load, so the skill you want isn’t so much reading or writing but ingesting a large volume of info.

Thanks. Also, do you have any recommendations for resources to use self-studying or advice for preparing for the essay potion of the exam?

You are a homeschooled freshman. Don’t take Art History until further into your high school work. Art history covers a lot of regular history you may not have had yet and may make more sense when you’ve had world history, european history, so other art. Your writing skills will improve as you take more classes.

Many schools do not allow freshmen or even sophomores to take AP classes. Don’t start with art history.

In addition to heavy memorization of art, you’d benefit from a solid background in world history. Unless you have that, I would not even attempt AP Art History until you have that background.

Thanks for the insight, although since I’m already committed to taking the course (apologies on my part for not making that clear), it’s not particularly helpful. If anyone has recommendations for books or advice for the exam though, I would greatly appreciate it.

You said you are self-studying- to what / to whom are you committed? It’s not too late for you to switch to a different history (or art) subject- and for that matter as you are at the Grade 9 level, there is no need or particular advantage in having it be an AP. One of the best things about homeschooling is that you have the flexibility to build an individualized curriculum, but it’s also important to build a strong base for future studies.
