My daughter is going into her senior year. She attends a small suburban HS that does not offer a lot of AP classes and very little flexibility in getting them - for instance if she wanted to take AP Spanish she could not take a Math class as all the math classes are the same time as AP Spanish. She originally wanted AP Spanish and AP Bio - but can only get AP Bio. However, she could take AP English Lit and AP ES. Just wondering what people thoughts are - Ideally she would have liked AP Bio with AP English - but they also are the same time. Thanks.

I think that if there is a scheduling conflict it would make more sense to take the APs that are relevant to what she wants to major in for college. Not so much for advanced standing or AP credit, but for personal enrichment. which combo makes more sense for her?

This scheduling conflict might be something for her GC to mention in her recommendation, since it might create a false impression that your daughter didn't take as rigorous a courseload as she could have (when, in fact, she did).

I agree with East09. Your daughter should take whichever AP is most relevant to her future field of study. If she's undecided, then she should take whichever one interests her the most. However, it's just my impression that AP English seems like one of the "expected" AP classes. It seems like the natural option for the progression of classes taken by a top student.

Also, since you said that all the math classes are offered at the same time, does that mean that all English classes are offered at the same time as well? If she didn't take AP Lit, would an honors English option be available to her? (Since English is one of those core classes that many colleges expect 4 years for.)

most colleges don't acknowledge APES b/c it is too new and too easy. you prob won't get credit for it!

Thanks for the messages - my daughter can take Honors English but our HS scheduled AP Bio and AP ELIT for the same time slot. We have a small school and limited AP classes (1 section for each) and are on a block schedule. I am not sure how they ever did the schedule - but it would make more sense to me if they scheduled all the AP math classes the same block, all the AP science a different block and then maybe alternate AP English with the other day for AP language since most students would opt to take an AP in one subject area. I appreciate all your response - since APES is not her first choice, I think I'll just have her stick with AP Bio - she is really interested in that and is excited about their summer project. This is really in line with what she wants to study in college. THanks for your help.
