AP Biology 2011 Official Thread

WOW! Again thank your very much, SeekingUni! I just spent time worthlessly with memorizing unecessary enzymes in the cycle of cellular respiuration…I am sorry that I keep positing new posts, but I do really have some bad problems that interfere with my studying and preparing for the AP Biology exam, and I am willing to hear any advices.

Some of crucial elements in studying for AP Bio exam are memorization, ability to maintain the memorized materials, and connecting various different concepts with themes in biology. I have trouble with them; I bought some commercial AP Bio Flash Cards Sets from Barron’s, Princeton Review, and 5 Steps to a 5. I can memorize the vocabulary and concepts but I cannot retain them more than a week. I also do not know how to connect various concepts (like connecting the concepts in cell respiration to biochemistry and ecology). Do you have any advice?? I am more than willing to hear them.

Here is another part. Do I have to read the Campbell Biology textbook for just preparing for the AP Bio exam?? I asked to my fellow students in AP Bio class, and they all said that they just see the vocabulary, pictures, graphs, and tables in the Campbell Biology textbook, and they even said that that method is the fundamental strategy of studying Campbell Biology textbook. So I quit reading Campbell Biology textbook, and bought “Student Study Guide for Campbell Biology,” book that is nothing to do with AP Bio and a study-guide book for Campbell Biology (condensing each section of the chapters in the textbook into few paragraphs, and even contain exact pictures the textbook has); reason for this is that I am feeling bad for not reading Campbell Biology so I bought student study guide for the textbook.

Main question is that is it alright, what I did? Also for getting 5 on the exam, do I have to read the actual textbook? Barron’s-Cliffs-Student Study Guide for Campbell Biology (also videos in Youtube) are enough to cover the Campbell Biology…isnt it?

Thank in advance!

I think that combination of books and other sources is plenty to get you a 5.

Everybody knew that there was heavy snow during mid-January. My school is in Gerogia, where heavy snow came, and whole week (including MLK’s DAY) was free. Because of that, my AP Bio teacher told me that the class have to skip some labs (Fruit Fly and Bacterial Transformation—Lab-6 & 7). Is skipping some labs are okay for preparing for the national exam? Is there any source that I can look up to learn whole experiment in official labs, including concepts andsetting-up an experiment?

Skipping them in school is fine; they’re all right here: [PHSchool - The Biology Place](<a href=“Prentice Hall Retirement – PHSchool – PHSchool.com – Savvas”>Prentice Hall Retirement – PHSchool – PHSchool.com – Savvas)

In my class last year, I think we only did three of them. It was up to us to learn the rest of them.

Has anyone done the Dihybrid Corn AP Bio lab yet? (it’s about Chi-square)

if so, can you guys help me out please? :)

Why is the statistical test more reliable than applying a simple percentage as was first calculated? (For example, there was 57% purple/smooth corn, 19% purple/wrinkled corn, 18% yellow/smooth corn and 7% yellow/wrinkled corn…

THanks:D

Yeah can anyone just explain what Chi square is and why it’s important?

^
Go to Khan Academy’s Business section. My AP Bio teacher found that video when we have to self-study the Fruit Fly Lab. Awesome video. In AP Biology perspective, comparing Chi-Square with actual value accept or reject the null hypothesis of Fruit Fly genetics.

Hello!
I am here to ask few questrions relating to strategies used for reading AP Bio prep books.
Everytime I read Barron’s or Cliffs AP Bio prep books, I do not retain all the information. I have to read over and over…Is there any strategy as to “how to efficiently read AP Bio prep books?” How do you read prep books? What are your methods and strategies?

Thanks in advance!

^

Read, visualize, repeat. If needed, look online for visuals or alternative explanations (e.g. Khan Academy). Most importantly, try to teach or explain the material to somebody else. Teaching is one of the most effective ways to learn something.

Everybody knows that Cliff Notes is best for AP Bio exam preparation. I thought that book will work well with me too, since the Cliffs AP Bio has highest popularity among the students. So I tested Cliff Notes, Barron’s, 5 Steps to a 5, Holtzclaw, TPR, and REA Crash Course. Surprisingly, Cliff Notes does not work well with me; I noticed that combo of “Barron’s-5 Steps to a 5-Holtzclaw” works well with me. I feel boring whenever read Cliffs, but really review wll with other prep books.
My question is that is it okay not to use Cliffs, despite its popularity, if it does not work well with me (meaning I do not review well with Cliffs)? Is Cliff Notes only way to get a 5?

Hi,
I was considering taking the AP Biology test this year without the class, and I’m planning to start preparing for it this weekend. I already have Cliffs, but my main question is: Is it enough? Is there more content that I should know that’s not in Cliffs? And is it really necessary to read Campbell? Thank you!

I would say Cliff’s alone is more than enough. Just read through it once or twice.

Cliff Notes AP Bio does not work well with me…

Cliff’s is definitely NOT the only way to get a 5. Most people like its format, but whatever helps you study better and more effectively is the thing you should use.

Hello again!
I have few questions…

Concerning with "Evolution Biology’ part of the exam, do I have to know the traveled routes of Darwin & HMS Eagle? Do I have to know the species and islands associated with Darwin?

You see, I only read pictures, graphs, diagrams, tables, and Chapter Summaries of Campbell Biology (nobody read it in my class). I am planning to use Barron’s + Pearson AP Study Guide as substitute for the textbook…is it safe? Also, which is better? Cliff + Barron’s or CLiff + 5 Steps to a 5 ??

Hi again,
I was wondering which sections of Cliffs I should focus on, or know especially well. Is there anything that’s not as important? Also, I was wondering how good the curve normally is on the AP Bio test. How well do I need to do to get a 5? (multiple choice/frq) Thanks!

I think the curve makes it easy to get a 5.

Hello!

My AP class started the “prep books exchange”, which students exchange their prep books with other students, in hope of mastering different approachment. I gave out my Barron’s (wordly and sometimes not getting to the main point), but keep my Cliffs and REA Crash Course; in exchange, my clasmate offers either Princeton Review or 5 Steps to a 5 AP Biology. I do not know which to choose. Time interval for each exchange is 3 weeks. Between Princeton Review and 5 Steps to a 5, which one do I choose from my classmate that can best fit with my Cliffs book, and also has good reputation?

Also, do I have to know every kingdoms and each subkingdoms in the Classification part of the AP Biology? I try my best, but only memorized hgalf of them…how big if Classification part of the exam?

Can some answer the question about the FRQs/MC? I’m not very good at FRQs

hi, just want to ask if there are a lot of ecology questions on the exam? are they really detailed?
