***AP Biology 2015 Thread***

Taxonomy is outside the scope of the exam.

outside the scope meaning it’s not on it?

It’s not on the exam.

It used to be on the exam, but after the changes for the 2013, they took it off.

As far as studying, I’d stay away from any memorizing steps. Most of the information is given on the exam. They test your ability to analyze scientific information. To do this, you need basic knowledge, but not the exact steps of, let’s say, photosynthesis

how does the surface area to volume ratio efficiency work ? should the SA be higher or less than the volume for max. efficiency?

SA needs to be higher. A 2:1 ratio SA:V is more efficient than 5:3 SA:V

what other things are outside the scope

Is tropism, plant anatomy or plant communication going to be a part of the test. My teacher gave me a review packet and it had that stuff on it and we never went over it in class.

All the systems except for endocrine, muscle, nervous, and immune.
Don’t go in depth into Animal behavior (like migration etc, just understand acquired characteristics)

I’m just looking at the barron’s book and taking out the info that’s not neccessary. If you have a specific topic you’re concerned, I can tell you.

You can skim through this, it specifically points out the changes to the exam and what EXACTLY you need to know.

As far as plant anatomy, just know about the phloem and then xylem. And the source to the sink idea. Understadn the concept of plant communication – they release a chemical that can be picked up by other plants and animals in order to survive since plants are unable to move. And again, understand the concept of tropism.

The questions will give you most of the factual information, so understanding the concept is key. Don’t worry about memorizing the little parts.

@moony can you go indepth more about phloem and xylem, never covered those in class

On the FRQs, if you aren’t very specific (Like not identifying and using formal terms), do you still get credit? Like if the question asks you to describe a process and you don’t use specific terms to explain it.

@AnniiT in my book it gives u a list of terms that u can use to get points, they’re very general tersm, nothing very very specific

Are biomes on the test?

Sure. Pholem is how the plant gets it’s energy (think ph = f = food). It’s basically a vessel that carries sugars from the leaves down to the rest of the plant through active transport. It only moves in one direction, and that is downwards.

The xylem is for transporting water and nutrients. It moves upward and uses cohesion and adhesion and water pressure in order to work. The water is absorbed into the tube, which continues to move upwards since it has an affinity to the tube, and carries another water molecule with it, because water has affinity to water. Once the water reaches the leaves, it evaporates, or transpires.

@CGlynn Other than being able to recognize the term, that’s probably as far as you need to go.

@AnniiT Most of the time on the FRQ rubrics, they give the definition of the process. It’ll probably make the AP reader think you know the material better if you use the specific term, but you’d still have to describe it.

Thanks bro

@moony1972 so basically you get the points for describing, not just saying a term?

Yes. They want to know that you fully understand a concept, not just were able to memorize the term.

@moony1972 Have you taken the AP Bio test in the past or something?
