***AP Biology 2015 Thread***

Can someone explain the effect of pressure on the filtrate in the nephron? I know that water leaves the filtrate as it descends and salt leaves as it ascends, but what is the significance of this? Also, how does alcohol affect ADH?

My teacher works on the college board AP readings, and everyone she has gotten everyone she has taught a 4 or a 5. Very few 4s, only by the people who never listened. She is also close to the exam writers.

I’m just sharing what she told us and all the links that she gave.

Do you have to remember any labs that we have done in class or do they provide us the information on the FRQs about it? I know that one of the two long FRQs are going to deal with a lab.

Well you’ve been a great help. Keep it up.

They provide the information on what the lab is, as well as data. They may ask you to hypothesize the outcome of a lab, after they give the data, or design an experiment using the concepts that you learnt from doing the lab (hypothesis, IV, DV, control).

But you don’t need to memorize the procedures or anything that drastic. They’ll explain it.

@RoadtotheIvies98 :slight_smile: I’m glad.

so the test is going to be like the ACT science. where they give u a passage and u need to interpret it ? doesn’t that seem a bit too simple. what’s the cathc ?

They’re not going to give you ALL the information. They’re going to give you definitions. You still need to understand the concepts, they’re going to give you the information that’s just plain memorization that you shouldn’t spend time doing. You need to know how to work problems, like using a Punnett Square and HOW neurons work. You need to understand WHY Darwin’s theory of evolution is backed up through scientific evidence. You need to understand how to answer scientific evidence. What you don’t need to know is every single detail of biology.

I actually do think it is straight up ACT science actually, i don’t know any bio (haven’t done it since 3 years and self studying it this year), and if you just focus on the questions you’ll get a 4.

@moony1972 do you mind explaining how neurons work, my teacher hasn’t gone over that much

@bigmanchicken Okay, the overall concept is this:

A stimulus comes into contact with a dendrite – the big body part of the neuron. This signal goes through a wire, which is called the axon. This axon is connected to another neuron’s dendrites, after a process called jumping the synapse. The synapse is a gap between the neurons that the electrical signal has to go through in order to get to the next one. This electrical signal is called the neurotransmitter. Using Ca, it is transported across the synapse and attaches to something called the postsynaptic receptor, which is located on the dendrite of the next neuron. This process continues until the the signal reaches the brain.

Also, be aware that there are two different things the neuron sends signals to:
Sensory neurons – which is what receives the external stimulus and transports the signal to the brain (basically what I explained above). The signal is usually received from one of your 5 senses
Motor neuron – which after the signal is received, the signal goes to a muscle, which then contracts or relaxes – how muscles move

How are you guys preparing for the free response section? I’m worried that there will be a question that I know nothing about.

Did collegeboard release a 2015 practice exam?

Thanks bro and @figureskater2 im worried about that too

@figureskater2 The best thing you could do is to look at past questions and see the general topics being covered. I’m looking at the barron’s book – they have a lot, and well written answers to go over the concept, as well as the 2013 and 2014 real exam and practice exams.

@akmadu I don’t think they did. But you can use 2014. Just remember, 2012 and prior is the old AP exam.

@moony1972 Well most of my friends got 3’s and 4’s last year on the test. Only like 2 people got a 5 because they were just naturally good at science (they didn’t really study that much for it). My teacher doesn’t really teach anything and to be honest, all of us taught the information to ourselves. I’m just trying to hit for a 4 so hopefully I ace the MC so I leave some room in order to mess up on some FRQs xD

@mmchocolate some teachers have given sample MCQ to their students, however 2012 exam is the only one released , you may just want to time yourself with those 2012 released ones .

Okay, thank you @moony1972

@haal2014 I’d actually stay away from that, just because they’ll test you on stuff you don’t need to know, and won’t give an accurate representation on the conceptual understanding.

@AnniiT Well, good luck  I’m sure you’ll do well. Just focus on the broad picture. Don’t concern yourself and spend time memorizing. It won’t really help you as much as you’d think it would

@moony1972 Do you know which system did they test last year? Did you teacher told you guys to focus on a particular system for this year? Thank you.
