AP biology or AP world

I'm going to be a sophomore next year in high school, and I am extremely indecisive as to whether I should take AP biology or AP world. AP world is much easier and it seems that I'd most likely succeed better taking AP world and Honors biology, but I'm most likely going to major in a science or become a doctor, and I think AP world looks better for colleges.

I really dont want to take two APs next year because the rest of my grades will suffer. HELPP what should I do?!?

I meant I think AP biology looks better for colleges**

AP Biology. You will find it hard, but it will be worth it in the end.

And it’s spelled ‘sophomore’ ;)

I took AP World, and I have to say that it’s actually a really interesting class. You will learn a LOT more than you would in the regular world history class. Being an AP class, it’s going to be harder than average. But the things you learn are totally worth it!

Taking a class because of how much it might impress a college is ulterior to whether or not the class interests you. Take which one you want, not because it might look nice, but because it interests you. Honestly, one AP won’t make or break your college choices. Take the one you want, the one that you think is more stimulating.

Can’t you take AP Biology another year? WHAP is a pretty useful AP (I regret not taking it), and prepares you for a lot of writing.

And if you really wanted to be competitive, you should take the two APs. Your grade would only suffer if you’re a completely lazy procrastinator. It’s entirely possible to still have good grades while taking 2 AP classes. And if your grades slip a little and you end up with a B, so what? A B in an AP class is weighted and is still better than an A in a regular class…okay, not sure if it’s better than an honors class.

But really, if you’re scared of taking two APs at once, how will you ever get through medical school?

…Okay, I guess WHAP doesn’t matter that much at all if you’re not going to take any English APs either.

My son took AP Euro in 10th grade and will be taking AP Bio in senior year. He took Honors bio in 9th grade as that is the way our school does it.

Don’t you need a social studies class in grade 10? What would you take if not WHAP?

^Um…regular world history? Haha

Thanks guys! Well I won’t have another chance to take AP biology because I plan on taking AP physio junior year and AP physics senior year, so I’m booked. But I actually do plan on taking AP literature as well.

You should have plenty of opportunities to take AP Bio later, even if you’re taking other APs. Many people around here take 10+ APs in their HS career. What is Ap Physio by the way?

If you want to be a doctor, AP Bio is the way to go.

Really? AP physio is a course my school offers, im not exactly sure what it is but it teaches about the human body and other things and I heard its a great course to take. Yeah thanks, a bunch of people were telling me AP bio is a required course to become a doctor but I wasn’t sure if it was true or not!

I’m going to be a freshman next year and I have the same problem. I am taking honors bio right now and it’s alright. I was debating to take ap bio or ap world. I heard that bio is REALLLLY HARD like a lot of people have D’s and F’s and someone told me that I would die taking it. AP world is easier and all the people I know are taking it. At first I was leaning towards bio but now I have no idea. I’m just scared about getting a bad grade. What should I do?

Regarding “AP Physio”–It’s not AP then, because AP classes all take the exam, and there’s no AP Physiology exam (assuming that’s what you mean by physio).

Regarding your actual question: Take whichever one you want to, not which will look better to colleges. AP classes look good in general. AP World is sort of what I like to think of a “base” AP class…something that’s certainly not necessary to take, but something that will help prepare you for other AP classes. It teaches you to think and analyze, and is about themes, not hard facts.

Plus, pretty much everyone in college has to take basic history classes, and getting a good score on the AP exam could help you not have to take as many history classes (depending on the college), so you could focus more on your pre-med classes then.

AP Bio is a good class too, but I don’t think you have to take it if you want to be a doctor. It’s NOT a required course to be a doctor. Think about it—some people don’t decide to go to med school until they get to college even.

Also, why can’t you take more than one AP classes in your junior and senior year? Colleges like to see that you’re taking a challenging course load, so while I don’t advocate for taking 5 AP classes necessarily, I don’t think you should automatically say, “I’m only taking one AP class a year.” See how it works with whichever one you end up in next year.

Unless you are applying into combined undergrad/medical programs (in which case you’d want AP Bio) you are just a student applying to college, right? You aren’t applying to med school yet. Med school will look at college classes and performance. I’d make sure you have one each of chem, bio and physics. And take the hardest levels that you can, but you don’t have to take AP in all of them. Any additional science classes are just electives. Take them if they interest you. But as a sophomore, it seems wise to take AP World to test the waters. Your grades are important.
