You need to takea form of chemistry before AP BIo.
in addition, colelges want to see one unit each of biology, chemistry, and physics. I know some HS do physical science and honors biochemistry so that students can take AP sciences jr and sr year but you shouldn’t pile up AP’s at the expense of the required curriculum.
As I said on a very similar thread of yours, colleges typically like to see a sequence biology, chemistry and physics. If you have completed these three HS classes then take what you want. If you have not taken biology yet then you should take bio.
I definitely wouldn’t take biochemistry before taking both biology and chemistry. I wouldn’t take physics before you’ve finished geometry. What is medical science? It sounds like another course that should be taken after biology and chemistry. AP biology should be fine in sophomore year. It won’t be easy though.
At our hs one takes Ap bio in 10th grade in place of regular or honors bio. It is a double period. Chemistry is in 11th grade whether regular, honors or Ap and physics is in 12 th grade. 9th grade is an integrated science with some each of the three main disciplines. So it is not universally true at all high schools that you need to take bio, chem and physics before Ap bio. High schools all do this differently.
That’s because your HS has an integrative science class that allows students to get the basics - assuming there’s an honors version, they have a foundation in bio, chem, and physics in 9th grade. Without that foundation, the students couldn’t jump straight into AP Bio or AP Chem.
Right. And we don’t know that the OPs high school doesn’t have something like that as well. I would have to assume that the OPs high school would not allow a 10th grader to register for the class that if they don’t have the proper pre reqs.
@momofzag I think we would all like to believe that. however…
There was a poster on Friday that was flunking AP Calc A/B. It came out during the discussion that the OP got a 78 in pre calc and a teacher recommendation to take Calc A/B. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/2031385-horrible-mid-year-report-p1.html
There is a difference meeting the minimum and a good idea. Even if the school doesn’t have Chem as a prereq, they should.
At our public HS the sequence is physical science 9th grade, regular or AP Bio 10th, regular or AP Chem 11th, and regular or AP Physics 12th.
It always seemed weird to me that 10th grade students with no dedicated regular bio class (or chem for that matter) would jump straight into a one period AP Bio class. No extra time for labs. But hey, that’s what it is and the kids seem to manage. AP Bio in 10th can be a struggle so be prepared.
