Ok, I signed up for ap calc originally, but now i'm having second thoughts. I will be a senior next year and will take 4 AP classes other than math. AP calc has a reputation of being by far the most rigorous AP class offered at our school, and only 4 kids this year got either a's or b's. Any thoughts on which one I take? Will colleges really care if they see that either way I am taking a demanding load? Oh yeah, I got a B in first semester honors pre-calc, and an A second semester. I really want to go to either Notre Dame, UMich, or Boston College, but I don't want my other grades to slip as a result of focusing on calc too much either. THANKS!

AP Stats is considered, more or less, as a joke class. AP Calc would be by far more preparing for college. Unless you expect to get a C in the class, I'd take Calc, as colleges would see that you're trying to challenge yourself with a demanding courseload.

Definitely AP Calc especially since you're going for those schools.

The Gatekeepers said it's considered a red flag. Math is not D's strong subject but she is going to take AP Calc AB instead of AP Calc BC. You need 4-year solid math.

Yeah, take calc unless you are sure you won't be able to pull out with a B in it.

What other APs are you taking?

I'm also taking AP Lit and Comp, AP Bio, AP Gov., and AP Econ. English and econ should be easy, but the other classes have a reputation of being very demanding. it's just that i also do 3 varsity sports and am president of 2 clubs, plus sat prep which is 45 min. away, so i'm kindof pressed for time. i think i can get a B in it, i just don't want my other grades to slip bc i'm focusing so much on one class. i've been told that last year it took students an entire block period (2 hrs) to get through 5-6 homework problems, and they were assigned 15.

Take AP Calc. I say give AP Calc a good hour per homework assignment, my teacher said 40 mins and he would give credit.

Anyway, I ended up with the only A in my Calc class, it was really fun ;)

Calc problems can be somewhat grueling. They tend to be long, and require more than just 1 or two answers...sometimes up to eight or nine along with separate graphs and such. So, you're not the only one to suffer.

I don't think you'll need to worry about gov't too much, it may have tougher standards at your school, but it's purely reading and memorizing for tests.

If you don't want to attend a top college, then don't take it. Otherwise, do it. I would drop down to a regular course out of the rest of your APs versus not choosing calculus.

thanks. yeah, i just know gov is really time consuming, but not as hard as some of the other honors/ap courses offered, so i guess i'll stick with calc unless someone can really convince me otherwise.

AP Calc. Stat is a blow off class that takes about half a semester to learn in college.

I agree that you should definitely take AP Calc.

llpitch, have you taken either class, just out of curiosity, or are you just assuming that that is true?

You can self-study Stat in a month, or in a long weekend if you've been exposed to a little stats in previous math classes.
