AP Calculus AB or BC?

Hi guys~

I'm currently in 8th grade in honors pre-calc, and it is quite easy. I pick up the material right away and soon get bored and let my mind wander. So my question is whether I should take AP Calc AB or BC as a freshman.

Thank-you~

That’s crazy…what middle school do you go to that even offers precal at all, and then AP Calc to freshmen? Regardless, I think AP Calculus is a whole different ballpark than Precal. I don’t know if I believe you, but I’d say take AB calculus; you could always take Calc II sophomore year to cover BC.

Well at the high school I’m planning on attending, they offer AP Calc Bc and AB, Calc 2 on campus, and then we are allowed to walk across the street to Cal State Fullerton to take Multivariable or Differential, etc. Also, I’ve heard that BC is essentially AB with a few additional topics and slightly more difficult AB problems.

oh gawd, just take AB since you are only an 8th grader. Sheesh. enjoy high school

LOL OP TOTALLY GOES TO TROY HIGH SCHOOL…haha

Yes, I am planning on going to Troy High. However, if I take BC then I’ll be able to go from BC to calc 2 to MV to DE. Which would be more fun. Haha.

I totally knew it was Troy ahahahahha way to go HSMCCP. OP just do whatever you want you obviously know yourself better than we know you

BC

10char…

I would recommend BC calculus. You’re right that BC calculus is mostly the same as AB with a few more topics. If you are doing well in pre-calc at your grade level then you would find AB calculus far too slow.

BC; if you’re as talented as I assume you are, then BC is not that difficult. I’m taking AB as a junior (as a class, HS doesn’t offer BC), but self studied BC during Winter Break. All of it. And trust me, if I can do it, and I’m not a very talented math person, then I’m sure you can too.

Pick BC. It’s basically AB, except a bit faster since you’ll have to go through 3 more chapters for the May exam.

Plus, you’re exactly like my friend; she thinks math is easy too. She took Honors Pre-calc in 8th grade, took BC as a freshman and is taking Multivariable now as a sophomore.

Well, I’m in Calculus AB because my school doesn’t offer BC, but even if they did, I’m not sure if I would take BC.

AB is equivalent to Calc 1 in college and BC is equivalent to Calc 2. Assuming that you pass the BC test, you’ll skip to Calc 3 in college. Do you really want to take that high of a class as an entering college freshman? The adjustment will totally be hard on its own, so idk if you’d want to make that big of a jump…

Plus, you’ll have taken all your calc classes in 9th and maybe 10th grade. You’re probably going to forget some of it. I’m a senior and I’ll probably forget some calc stuff when I go to college next year.

I thought they had age limits for AP classes, and even if they don’t, I’d be careful if I were you. Don’t rush into things so much. Even if you are talented and gifted, the AP tests are brutal. Don’t take too many, and maybe don’t take all of the so early.

Clearly this student is very talented. I recommend BC, MV, DE, and then some. AB is ludicrously easy. Don’t slow him down.

Any college class in high school is far from “easy.” if they were, then even the kids of average intelligence would be taking them.

I just think it has to be remembered that this is a talented kid, but it’s also a ~14 year-old

You’re so smart!! You should definitely take AP Calculus BC!!!

Thanks for the input guys~

I’m 13 by the way ^.^. I would say that my sister, whom is a sophmore is taking honors pre-calculus this year alongside me. She is going to be taking AP Calculus AB next year, but she consistently has to work harder to pick up on math concepts. So my thoughts were:
if she can take AB, then I should have no problem taking BC.

thanks~

Did you have to take a test to be in this program? How are you taking pre-calc honors in 8th grade? You’re soooooooooooo smart!!!

You’re super smart! At my school, even a few of the seniors have problems with AB. If you’re in precalc and are doing well, then you can take AB or BC. It depends on what level you are most comfortable with. It is known that students who do well in BC have taken AB before. But if you think you can handle BC, I say go for it!

Calc AB is REALLY Easy. Trust me. I got a 99% on the test I just took haha (I lost 1 point for not using an exact value…).

You should take BC… If you don’t take BC I’m gonna call you a ■■■■■ (LITERALLY AB IS A JOKE).

You can’t compare your experience at one school with that of another. Different teachers write different tests that may or may not be harder.
