If I take AP Calculus AB next year in 12th grade but self study for BC and score a 5 on the BC Calc AP exam (would assume if I can get a 5 on BC I will on AB also) will that look just as good as actually taking the class? Unfortunately if you take college level Pre-calculus at my school you're not allowed to take BC. You have to take a special class (not calc AB) to get into BC where I go to school, and I took Pre-calc not aware of this disadvantage.

It will look even better, I think.

Schools won’t see it until after you’ve been accepted…

I thought the AB and BC exams were at the same time so you can’t take both of them in one year. Unless that’s not what you’re talking about doing.

I believe he’s going to take the BC exam and he’s aware that AB and BC cannot be taken concurrently in the same year.

Judging from his words it sounds like he is not aware of this, but I’m not making any predictions.

Only came to reemphasize this:
*

The Calculus BC exam has an AB subscore, so you can get a 5 on the BC exam with a score of 5 on the AB sub-part.

It won’t look good because they won’t know you’re taking it self-study. They’ll see the AB course on your transcript but will have no idea of your intentions to self-study unless you specifically tell them which may not be the best idea.
