I am currently a junior in high school and was wondering if I should take ap Chem along with ap physics 1. I plan on becoming an electrical engineer.
One of my kids did something similar and it worked out well for him. He took honors Chem and AP physics. He is now in college studying to be an engineer. It was not AP chem tho. But he was a sophomore when he did that. He’d had AP calc the previous year which I think was helpful. Would you be taking cal or already have had calc?
Yes I would be taking calc
Hi there, I’m a junior this year too and this year I took AP Chem, AP Physics 1 and AP Calc at the same time.
From my experience, it was difficult to balance both chem and physics at the same time and excel at both. Throughout this year I basically did mediocre in both instead of doing really well in one class. However, I will say that although taking both wasn’t very fun and I wouldn’t completely recommend it, taking both at the same time was feasible and it wasn’t too difficult to learn both subjects - you just might not be able to give each subject the undivided attention you might be able to give it if you were only taking one of them, but that also depends on the other classes you’re taking.
Taking AP Calc at the same time wasn’t an issue at all (I did AB instead of BC because of the fact I was already taking two ap sciences) since Physics 1 is algebra based, and there isn’t calculus in AP Chem.
If you think you want to do electrical engineering, I think it’s important to take AP Physics especially to see if you enjoy it. Taking AP Chem might also help you see if you’re interested in other branch of engineering.
So basically, if you think you can handle both, and you are really passionate about science, then yes, you should do it.
