So, I am having a dilemma over my junior year schedule to resolve at registration about whether or not i should add on ap chem in addition to ap physics 1. I’d like how i could take the subject test in it june at end of junior year.
Here is my junior year schedule:
AP Lang
Ap Gov
AP Macro/Micro
Ap Physics 1
AP Capstone***
precalculus honors
theater
***In order to take AP Chem, I would have to drop AP Capstone (ive heard it is kinda worthless). The reason I’m asking is whether or not it is a good idea to take 2 ap sciecne classes at one time or if it’s okay as i have prereqs for both (algebra 2 and chem honors for both classes). Also, for ap physics 1, do you need calculus ab (taking senior year) or is the math encountered in ap phsyics able to be done off of mostly advanced algebra/preaclculus topics?
In short, is ap chem a better option than ap capstone, and is it too much or okay with ap physics 1. Does anyone have experience taking these 2 classes at the same time?
Are you interested in going into a stem field? If not, it’s definitely unnecessary. If you are interested in those courses, it is doable but will obviously take some hard work. AP Physics 1 does not require any calculus, it is algebra based. AP Physics C is the calculus based ap physics course.
It all depends on whether you’ll have enough time in your schedule to do it, seeing that your course load is rigorous already. I’m taking both this year along with two other AP classes. Also it kind of depends on how the course is at your school and its pass rate.
Also like said earlier if you aren’t planning to go into the STEM field, there really is no point in taking both or either of them.
I am considering a STEM field- either pre med or chemical engineering and I would kind of like to take the 3 core ap science classes (physics 1 and chemistry junior year with bio senior year).
At my school, ap physics 1 is better than the 40% pass rate nationally and we might hover up to 50%. And for ap Chem, there was a bad teacher this year but I know 2 people- 1 got a 4 and 1 got a 5. The 1 who got a 5 also got a 5 on ap physics at the same time. But I don’t know if I am smart enough to do it even though I got an A in honors Chem.
Then I say go for it if you really want to. Unless if you want to hold off one till next year or something. If you think you’ll be able to handle all the work, then go ahead and take off AP Capstone and put Chem in there. Also quick question, is any of these ap science classes a block period at your school? You might want to make sure cause if it is you’ll have to take off another class.
No problem! I also just to ask about the block schedule thing cause I also have seven 50 minute periods at my school but chemistry will take up two of them, and also kids taking AP Bio have 2 periods taken up.
Also, the other two I’m taking is APUSH and AP Lang. Then pre-calc and band takes up the rest of my schedule.
@solarsystem did you mean you took AP Physics 1, AP Chem, APUSH, AP Lang and pre-calc? I knew it is different for different schools and teachers, but how much time did you spend on your homework?
@annamom I’m taking those classes this upcoming year. But from my experience of taking 3 ap classes at once this year, I actually did not have too much homework. Except maybe a lot in AP World.
My DS took AP physics C and AP Chem at the same time and loved it. Scored well on the exams also. It was senior year and he took 3 additional APs as well.
Okay so if I change to ap Chem ur schedule is similar to mine except I have 2 social studies classes in place of ur APUSH. I took APUSH as a sophomore and it is a good class; you will enjoy it under a good teacher!
AP Physics 1 and AP Chem at the same time is totally doable. My junior year, I took AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Chem at the same time, and Mech is harder than 1. I also took Lang and Stat, and yet I still managed to finish with an A- in Mech and an A+ in Chem.
