for those who used the zumdahl book in your ap chem class, does your class cover the whole book or only the first half of it?? Since the ap chem class is supposed to be the 1st semester of college chemistry class, i think only first half of zumdahl should be covered in the ap chem class, but however for some competitive high schools, they probably will cover more. So anyway for people who have taken the ap chem class and exam, did you study the whole book or only half of it??? thx~!

We cover chapters 1-17 before the exam. Is that the entire book or just half? My book is like four feet from me. I refuse to get up.

There are 22 chapters.
It seems like every school has its own scheduel for ap chem. Some of them cover only half (11 chapters) of it while some private high schools finish the whole book(22 chapters)
um that's interesting...so basically, i think i don't need to finish the whole book to prepare for ap chem exam?

Isnt AP Chem = 2 semester of college chem?

no they only give you 1 semester credit/ap and so does other ap classes

Not all AP classes give 1 credit. Some give 2 credits, some give none.

The credit depends on the college. Technically, AP Chem is supposed to cover all the material of a first year general chemistry course. Some colleges will give you credit for the full year of class and lab, some only for a year of class and others only for one semester. I just looked at the chapter listings for the book, and I think that the AP test covers through chapter 17 (electrochemistry). I don't remember learning about specific groups or basic orgo. (Though my memory is a bit vague.. It's been two years since I took AP chem)

for which ones they give 2 credits??
ap ush?

Yale gives 2 credits for a 5 on AB or a 4 on BC.

My class covered the whole book, and then reviewed for the last month. The nuclear chem we did fast because he said that Ap doesnt cover it much. We met for 95 min a day, and every thurs and friday we went and did labs. We did 20 labs during the year. We also did lots of crossword puzzles in there, and talked about everything. Fun time.

ap chem is more than 1st semester college chem. therefore, you must cover chapters 1-17 and do minimal reviewing of chapter 18 in Zumdahl before taking the AP test. If you do not, you will not know ANYTHING about equilibrium and will thus get a 0/10 on the first part of the free response section. The 2nd and 3rd usually deal with kinetics of some sort, so you'll miss out on that too. In sum, you need to cover more than the first half of the school. Any school covering only chapters 1-11 is absurd.

anybody knows what school gives out 2 semester credits for ap chem?

My college (JHU) does and I know that two of my state's schools (UT-Austin and Texas A&M) both do. Other than that, you can look up AP credit policies here

we did chapters 1 - 11 and chaper 22 (organic chem) ALREADY.

is that way too fast?

our teacher did like 2 things from chapter 5 and 6 and said you just plug into formula and get your pressure... oter than that, nothing.

ap chem is such a stressful class and definitely the hardest ap.

I really dont remember what chapters of the book we covered, but we were very well prepared for the AP exam. I think we covered 1-17 at least but we did do nuclear and organic over breaks (didnt spend any time on them in class).
AP chem is definitely not harder than BC calc, and I got a higher score on it than US history (5 and 4) even though US history is considered an easy ap

i got a five, did it by slacking so i know exactly what the bare minimum is :)
i suggest you don't worry too much about anything beyond the basics - organic and nuclear way pushing it. i would only pay attention to that garbage if you are actually interested. instead, study only till 17 ish, that's what my class did and we had nearly 50% fives.

yes you only need to get about 60% of the test right to get a 5

on the final exam for my ap chem class we were given a model AP exam and raw score out of 160 for a 5 was 104, I got a 119 so that is the best estimate as to what i got on the AP

exactly. everything above like 60% raw score is a 5. i would say it's the weirdest ap curve out there, but i can't be sure about that.

thank you guys!
so now i can tell my counselor that i want to apply for JHU and thus need to take the ap exam.
my counselor always tell me that since i took the 1st semester in a cc, there's no need to take the exam again.
my school is so strict about who can take the ap exam and who can't because counselors here are afraid that self study students will lower the average score.

Well, my teacher sucks so we use our Honors Chem lecture notes while those who want to succeed buy a review book. We're in Chp 8...9? IDK, I learn from the AP review book, but we're supposed to finish the book with 2 weeks to spare, before the AP exam
