AP Chem or AP Bio?

I am currently a freshman who is going to take Chemistry over the summer. Now I am stuck with what I should choose for next year's AP science.
I want to know what you learn in both classes and which one is better in your opinion and why. I cannot decide for myself now because I do not know which one I will like better and what you learn in the class. Also, which one is harder?
IF I want to do independent research in the future, which class would be more helpful?
I have decided earlier that I am going to take AP Chem, but now I am not sure anymore since my sister is taking it and she said it's boring.
I have heard that my school's AP Bio teacher is very passionate about the subject and teaches well.

At my school, AP Chem’s a lot harder than AP bio. But it depends on your school/teacher. I took AP biology sophomore year and it was alright. I’ve never taken AP chem.

(Not trying to steal the thread) What about for a comp science/finance/econ type of major? should you take AP Comp Science with reguular Chemistry or AP Chem (super hard at my school).

^make your own thread

Take AP bio. Your GPA will thank you.

have you ever taken a basic class on either.

I have taken Biology in 9th grade and then Chem in 10th. I will be taking AP bio next year (senior year)

If you enjoy more math-oriented classes, i would say pick Chem, i have found that the kids who are exceptional math students really enjoyed chem and are doing AP Chem next year. Chem doesnt involve a lot of math but the concepts involved in Chemistry are best understood by those who do well in math classes.

AP Bio on the other hand can be viewed as difficult because the amount of memorization. Chem is not as much memorization as it is understanding concepts and then applying them to more complicated situations and expanding on them. For AP Bio you really need to just have a passion for Biology in general. I am fascinated with the human body and how everything works, so I happen to find Bio very interesting. Yes there is also a Environmental aspect of the class but its the same ideas just how things work in the envorinment as opposed to your body.

Hope this helps!

Well, I would take chem just because it’s a lot less memorization-based than bio, & I find it easier. I think bio is more interesting than chemistry, but I think chemistry is a lot less tedious than bio (then again, that may be because I have a really boring bio teacher & a pretty cool chem teacher). Biology is studying life (ecosystems, evolution, genetics, cells, etc.), while chemistry is studying what the world is made up of (elements, compounds, chemical reactions, atoms, moles, molecules). Chemistry is a bit harder to explain in just a couple of sentences.

(Also, I’m terrible at math and still love chem.)

AP Biology is a ton easier than AP Chemistry.

Chem work load is easier but more conceptual as opposed to memorization for bio

if you have taken honor/regular Bio and Chem then you would know which is better for you. But you could take both…

I can’t fit in both Ap bio and Ap chem, and I want to take Ap physics c and then b later.

I saw my sister’s Ap chem textbook, it looks kind of boring… Well, what kind of things do you learn in Ap bio?

something to note is that collegeboard is changing the ap bio syllabus next year. it’ll be a more inquiry based apparently. a bit more hands-on

You can look up the AP Course description on collegeboard.com for more info.

Wow, I had exactly the same question! I also took Bio this year and I’m gonna skip Chem this summer, too. I talked to my friend’s brother (he’s a senior, he took both in high school). He said that AP Bio was a lot easier, but it might just vary from school to school.

Um… So hard to decide! Seems like more people say Ap bio is easier than Ap chem.

wait did you say you want to do AP physics c first then ap physics b? isnt it the other way around

also dont go by whats easier!!! the thing your more interested in is going to be the easier one!
i recommend looking online and researching the course outlines and supplemental materials to get some background knowledge on the two courses so you can find which subject better suits you

I’m in AP Chem right now (never done Bio), and I would recommend AP Chem. It’s a legitimately interesting high school class- the first class that I can give such praise. It’s so interesting to get a basic understand as to how the universe works. The only description that I can give to topics such as voltaic cells and parts of thermochemistry is orgasmically interesting.

I even have a horrendous teacher (I’m essentially self-studying), and I still love it. It’s all concepts so there is essentially zero memorization or tedious calculations.

From experience in regular Bio and Chem does differ. Bio is more learning, understanding life, memorization type (I simply did not like the class, I usually like ALL science classes but this one just dull on me). Chem is more understanding concept (more math), and how elements functions- also this class was indeed harder than regular Bio, I manage to get straight A’s with little effort while the rest of my class kinda struggles (Even my smart friends).
So it really depends on you, you might perform better in Chem or better in Bio. Off-topic: How come there isn’t a biochemistry class???
