AP Chem or AP Physics?

DD is a Soph taking Chem H and pre-calc. Next year she will be taking AP Calc BC. Junior and senior years she wants to take AP Chem and AP Physics. She wants to do Physics next year because that is what most of her friends are doing. I think it makes more sense to take Chem again now, and then take the SAT2 at the end of the year. I think Chem will be easier for her and she will have a better grade which will be important Junior year. Physics will be easier after she's had more math. Anyone else have any pros or cons? Thanks.

ap physics b or c?

AP chem is harder than Physics B which I assume you’re talking about. The math is the easiest part of those classes so don’t worry about that. I’d say let her take whatever she wants. She could take the physics SAT2 (the curve makes up for the difficulty) at the end of the year and still be fine.

It just says AP Physics 1 (and there is no 2) so I should assume that is the same as B? Not really sure. Thanks. Do others think the Physics is easier?

If it’s AP Physics 1 then yes. It’s mostly Algebra/Precalc based physics, though I think 1 might touch on basic calc equations. I’m currently in Hnrs Physics (my school doesn’t offer AP physics 1 or b), which is pretty similar, and the material is MUCH easier than hnrs Chem, so I’d go with AP Physics 1. Also, she can take AP Physics 2 after 1, which looks very impressive on college transcripts.

Is it possible to take both next year?

Thanks. As far as I can tell we don’t have AP Physics 2, so she wants to take APChem. I thought it made more sense for her to take that next year and physics the year after but I guess you all are saying I am wrong. (Hmm… first time for everything.) No, she can’t take both. She already has AP ELA, APUSH, AP BC (will take Calc3 Senior year) Spanish4H, Latin2, gym (required) and band. I think she’s nuts!

At my school you need permisson to take ap physics 2 and ap chem, so i guess it’s different at her school. APUSH can be a very hard and demanding class (homework wise), otherwise her other classes look manageable.

I highly suggest AP Chemistry, it is more beneficial and arguably easier compared to AP Physics. Plus, College Board just release 2 additional APs dedicated to Physics, so there is now AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Physics B, and AP Physics C. So it is probably time consuming also.

She should honestly do AP Physics 1 & 2 junior year and AP Physics B & C senior year, if she is really up for that and it’s meant for future engineers and such. Otherwise, AP Chem all the way.

I think she should take AP Chem. First of all, I don’t the math part matters at all, she’s already two years ahead most sophomores (in my school they don’t let sophomores take anything higher than Algebra II unless they double up). It would be awesome if she could do both, but that’s probably not gonna happen and it’s unnecessary. I’m taking AP Chem next year and I think it helps taking high school chemistry a year before. You should definitely plan to take AP Physics senior year, at least if she’s planning to major in STEM, because it’s really a good foundation.

The college board got rid of AP Physics B and replaced it with Physics 1 and 2 right? so Physics 1 should be easier because its only half of what you learn in Physics B.

Ok. She does need permission for anything she takes. It has all been granted. I don’t think they will care if she switches from Phy to Chem, although it would need to be approved. AP physics 1 is the highest level we have so only one year of it will work. So it’s really just the order I’m concerned about. The general pattern at our school for advanced kids is: bio, ES, chem, physics (regular, H, AP) and then AP bio or chem. just seems odd to me. The only real reason she has for wanting to take physics first is “everyone else is”.
