I’m currently taking regular chem, and I’m one of the top students in my class. I usually understand the concepts the same day (or the next) they’re taught, compared to the rest of my peers that seem to struggle after numerous examples and clarifications (ex. My teacher’s doing some complicated problem on the board and after he’s finished there’s a pause followed by several WHAT’s ) I’m considering taking AP chemistry next year as a junior, because judging by this class, I’m pretty good at the subject (with my A test/quiz average to back it up). I probably should’ve taken honors, but at registration I had no clue how well I would do in chemistry until now. If it helps any, I’m currently taking 2 AP courses, so I’m used to the workload. What do you guys think? It’s also apparently one of my school’s hardest AP classes which I do admit sounds scary to me
If you really enjoy chemistry, then by all means take it! It is really a great class for people who love science and like learning all the why’s behind what happens all around us. I love the class, and while it is very difficult, I find the work and study time very worth it. Good luck to you!
Yes, AP Chem is very rigorous. It’s probably one of the hardest AP classes no matter what school you go to. I do have to mention though that regular chemistry is much more different AND easier compared to AP Chem. Your decision to take this class depends entirely on a couple of factors. Are you willing to self study the materials each day? And if you do struggle with the subject, what will you do? How will you find help? Is science your strongest subject? Junior year is considered the most important of your high school years, so make it the best you possibly can. Talk to your guidance counselor and see what he/she thinks about this. Go through the AP Chem practice multiple choice exam on CollegeBoard and see if you really want to take the class for yourself. I am also a firm believer that teachers make the greatest difference no matter what subject. Some teachers just cannot teach. How is the AP Chem teacher like at your school? I suggest you talk to the teacher and his/her class syllabus and see if you’d be able to follow it.
I don’t mean to scare you, but getting a C in AP Chem compared to an A in Honors/Regular can look bad for college depending on where you’re planning to apply to.
Sounds like a good idea! If you do well and perhaps can ask the Honors teacher for complementary material, or even perhaps if you can switch to the Honors section?
