Any CC members have any advice for those thinking about taking AP Chem in the upcoming year?
You’re better off perusing the 2015-2016 thread and/or asking your question there. Few students, IME, visit the threads that do not relate to their year.
The best advice I can give is to start practicing whatever you learn as you’re learning it, not the day before the test. Unlike honors chem where you may have been able to easily ace without studying it, AP Chem will require studying at least a couple days before where you can practice what you’ve learned. AP Chem problems are ones you solve with skill rather than studying it. My class was super hard but I’m sure I got a 5 with the teacher I had. Even if you have an easy teacher for AP Chem, make sure you still follow this study pattern so that you’re better prepared for the ap exam. Many of friends had the super easy teacher, but literally ended up crying after taking that exam as they just weren’t used to the difficulty. Really do not procrastinate and you will be fine.
Anyone start their AP Chem summer homework yet?
@smartyboy My AP Chem teacher doesn’t seem all too good though. Only one student passed last year, and I’m aiming for at least a 4. So I’ll be self-studying the whole year—instead of cramming one week before the exam.
@kassh4 We didn’t exactly have summer homework :-S, which worries me.
Yeah, our AP Chem teacher is notorious for curving the test a lot but the class doesn’t do to well on the AP Test.
@kassh4 We didn’t have summer homework. I have the possibility of getting one of two teachers. The one I want has actually never taught AP Chem and was teaching AP Physics 1 last year, but he was a Chem major and is pretty awesome.
@smartyboy Thanks for the advice. Now it’s up to me to actually keep it! Do you have any topics that I should go over before school starts?
@Hamlon Our school only has 1 teacher and he only has one class of AP Chem(class of 32 kids I think). He has a Masters in chemistry, but he is really monotone and boring. I had him for chem 1 and I did pretty well in that class. I got a 99.74% first semester and 98.65% second semester. Then again a lot of people say that AP is nothing like regular chem. Obviously going for that 5.
Has anyone spotted a AP BIO or APUSH thread yet?
@kassh4 Not yet, but you can always start one.
@kaash4 @ZealousScholar Don’t depend on the curve or the easiness of the class to do well on the exam. Definitely need to try and get a 100% on it if it really is easy or if it’s always curved. Take a lot of AP practice tests and find your own AP level chapter tests if the ones you’re given don’t seem to be at that level.
@smartyboy Thanks for the advice. If you don’t mind, can you recommend a prep book or website to get accurate questions/practice tests?
@ZealousScholar my teacher posted this link:MODERATOR’S NOTE: Link deleted - not allowed.
to see reviews of different books, but she told us that the summaries of the books are pretty vague and how we should go over all our lecture notes before taking our cumulative final and before the ap exam. I just looked over the notes and problems we did in class and did sample free response questions from previously release exams and our teacher gave lots of sample multiple choice questions from a review book for practice. Barron’s is notorious for having difficult practice tests than the actual test itself (I barely got a 600 on the Sat US History Barron’s, but got a 730 on the actual subject test), but not sure if it applies to AP Chem. Or else in general you need to just keep practicing and learn how to translate what the problems they give you into actual english as they are not straightforward and know the correct formulas to use to solve them. Practice, don’t procrastinate, and you’ll be fine.

@smartyboy Can you post the name of the website for the book reviews? A higher member in college confidential removed the link because it wasn’t allowed.
@ZealousScholar just search: best ap chem review books of 2016 and it should be the first one.
Am I the only one that didn’t get summer homework for AP Chem
No few people didn’t get summer homework. We have a test over the first 4 chapters first day back. uggg junior year.
Wow and I thought my teacher was rough
