Hi, my son is planning to take the AP chinese course/exam next year. We are non native chinese (Indians). I wanted to know how the college admissions perceive a non native speaker scoring high in an AP chinese course? My son is very good with Chinese and will probably get a 5. Do the admissions care about this subject at all? Thanks
They care about the rigor any AP course has. They care about the applicant having the college’s recommended HS prep in foreign language. They care about the AP score as much as they care about any AP score.
But if your questions is do they award bonus points for a non-native speaker scoring a 5, then no.
This definitely is good. Shows that your child has the ability to learn a complex foreign language. There are lots of kids with Chinese ancestry who also take the exam, so a score of a 5 is not that uncommon.
But as part of the overall package, this does look good.
While it won’t be weighted any more heavily than other AP exams or other foreign languages, it will likely be weighted more than it would be for a native speaker who took the test without any classes, thinking a 5 would be impressive.
