I'm taking AP Physics B this year. I know it is still early but certain aspects of the class pose a challenge. I have always had 100+ weighted averages in all of my honors courses, especially science. Would an unweighted average in the 80s in AP physics look bad on my college application, or will they see this as a way of me challenging myself?

One B isn’t going to hurt you (assuming grades in the 80’s count as B’s at your school), even if you’re applying to the Ivy League. If you had a tough class, you could potentially demonstrate your mastery of the subject matter by scoring a 750+ on the Physics SAT II subject test or a 5 on the AP exam.

thank you, any other opinions?

I agree with the last poster. If that’s really the lowest science grade you’ll have, then it’s hardly a problem especially since it is AP. And, also like the last guy said, strive for a top score on the AP exam to prove to colleges that while you may have struggled at times in the course, you were able to gain a full understanding of the subject. That’s all that’s really important.

They will see it as you have challenged yourself. The world of college has B’s in it - great preparation. I know a student that didn’t receive a B until Senior year and she felt that this actually helped her get in. They see too many students with no experience in handling classes where they have struggled at all (she was admitted to Stanford btw). Also know a student at Brown in the same situation.

It will not kill your application, but see if you can get it up to an 85+. Taking the AP shows your willingness to challenge yourself, you do not need an 80 for that.
