I’m looking towards schools like UCLA, UCB, and UIUC.
I’m worried that by the time I apply to college I won’t have enough AP classes. Almost all of the classes I’ve taken are honors but only AP Junior English will be on my transcript when I apply. I’m currently a sophomore and up to this point only AP electives are offered. Junior year the AP’s are english, apush (which I’ve been told is the hardest class in the school, and AP physics which my current chem teacher did not place me in to for next year. I’m thinking of taking a majority of AP classes my senior year. Am I worrying too much?
It’s too early to know anything. You haven’t taken any SATs or ACTs and grades will change by senior year.
As long as your HS schedule is considered rigorous in comparison with your fellow classmates, you should be fine.
There is no specific threshold for the number of AP classes to take. Take the AP classes in which you think you can do well and enjoy.
Not every school offers many AP courses. As long as your GC consider your load to me most rigor, you are fine.
Context matters for AP classes. If your school doesn’t offer many and/or most top students in your school don’t take many, you could still be competitive for the colleges you listed. If the top 10-15 percent of your class will mostly be taking several APs junior year (and might have taken APs as electives in freshman or sophomore year) then schools like UCLA, UCB and UIUC will be much tougher to get into especially if you are non-resident. I’m not advocating taking on more APs than you feel comfortable taking though. Just make sure you have an appropriate college list and understand whether the schools you listed are reaches vs matches. Be sure you have a safety or two as well.
In state or OOS for the UCs? If out of state your honors classes will not earn the extra GPA boost. UCs are GPA driven. You will need the best possible GPA for grades 10-11.
