Hey guys!
I am a junior right now. So far my schedule for my senior year looks like this:
AP Lit
AP Bio
AP Euro
AP Calc AB
Spanish 6
Nightcourse on History of Western Political Thought (only 15 people get in)
Advanced Drama
Facing History and Ourselves

I was wondering if taking AP Stat instead of AP Calc AB would be make much of a weaker candidate. If I get in (i really hope I do…) I would probably go into the Theatre Arts concentration.
Any thoughts?

Because I made that EXACT decision (chose ap stat over ap calc) and i also applied for theatre arts

not taking ap calc was one of the better choices of my life

and hey, i got in!

Since the brown curriculum is so flexible, i really don't think it makes a huge difference. i chose stat not only because i heard horror stories about calc, but also because i would not have been able to take a shakespeare class i had been waiting for since freshman year. i think my counselor wrote about this, and i guess it gave the impression that i had a good handle over what was educationally best for me.

good luck with everything! it will all work out!

Dude I am also going to take Advanced Drama!!! That is funny. And musicmam921, thank you for saying what you said..about the dumb people. I am working my hardest and some people still have the room to critisize. So thanks man, but yeah, typecastme22, I hope things go well for you!! You should check out my classes for next year..

Thanks guys.
Musicman- in high school were you super involved in theatre? Because pretty much that is the core of my EC's. I was just wondering if you knew of a lot of people who used theatre as their essay. Because I have been looking on this board and not a lot have said anything about theatre. I am trying to put a unique twist on my involvment in theatre for my essay and I was just curious if you knew of some things that EVERYONE talks about.

i was involved to the fullest potential that my HS offered...which wasn't a whole lot but wasn't little, if that makes sense

we didn't have a drama dept. persay, but we put on 2 major productions a year and this past fall, when we had no director for our play, i directed it with a friend.

my essay wasn't on theatre...it was actually on a very personal experience. i was nervous, but hey-they must have liked it.

and i don't know about self-studying an ap class. i almost did it, but realized there was too much other stuff going on. honestly, your schedule looks really good for next year. college applications can be maddening and by the time they are done, you don't really have alot in you left to care about school anymore. if it's a subject you are genuinely interested in, go for it. but if not-don't worry. you already have alot going on and one extra class isn't going to make or break you.

As for self-studying an AP, it depends on how well you like the subject. When I took Stats in 10th grade, it was my teacher's first real year teaching the course and so it was basically self-study. I ended up doing well and scored a 5 on the AP exam. But then again I really like math so it didn't bother me to go on my own time and research on statistics or sit down for two straight hours at a time outside of class and do practice tests. Your motivation really. I would say self-studying Calc AB is fairly possible, though self-studying BC might be difficult.

I was thinking more along the lines of psych... just because it interests me and my school is just putting in a psych course (not AP) next year. I decided not to take it because of scheduling issues and because I don't know how it's going to be considering it's the first year the course is being taught.

I don't know if self-studying really "looks good" since colleges can't tell if you're self studying. I know they can compare your classes to your own self-reported tests, but since you don't send them an official report, they can't really put any weight on it at all.

Oh yeah, AP Stat would be a nice easy choice. But Calc AB isn't too bad/hard (of a class). BC is another story (for me at least).

I think your schedule looks awesome as well. I don't know if I'm right, but in my opinion, I highly doubt any college admission officer will say, "I will accept A over B simply b/c A took an independent study course or an extra AP course or even a night course whereas B didn't." I would spend more time on my essays, if I were you, b/c those are probably the more interesting things to read anyway. Good luck with everything next year! I hope you get into Brown. :)
