I will be a senior next year (2013-2014) and I have been scheduled to take 3 AP classes (AP US, AP Spanish Literature, and AP English). i am also going to take trig III at my school and Precalculus at Lehamn College. I will also hopefully be part of Leadership which is in charge of all school events and fundraisers. we plan everything from bake sales and talent show to prom and field day. I am extremely nervous. I know i have what it takes to go through with this and i really want to but it is very intimidating. i am super scared that i will end up failing every class. i have high expectations for myself but i fear that i am not going to be able to go through with it. I do not have the best attendance or grades but i am very smart. i also have trouble with time management. although i am nervous and scared i am excited to start and there is no class that i do not absolutely love. i plan on majoring in math and minoring in Spanish so i definitely need to take those classes. everyone has to take english in college so why not get that out of the way. my US teacher was so excited to have me in her class so i do not want to let her down. And finally, leadership is really fun and i would love to have a say in everything that goes on in my senior year. i had leadership in my junior year for some odd reason and those people were completely inconsiderate of what the other seniors wanted. I feel that if i cannot handle my AP courses i will not be able to handle college. PLEASE HELP ME. I AM STARTING TO THINK I BIT OFF MORE THAN I CAN CHEW. I WANT TO HEAR WHAT YOU GUYS THINK.

I cannot speak to AP Spanish Literature, but AP US History and AP English notoriously have pretty heavy work loads, though the material itself may not be that challenging - time management is CRUCIAL for APUSH especially, since there is so much information to absorb in such a small amount of time which lends itself to tedious and often large sets of notes/worksheets/essays, etc.

I don’t think that your ability to take on multiple AP classes will be indicative of your ability to succeed in college. I know kids who took only one, if not any, AP classes, and are thriving in college.

I think its manageable - everything you’re signed up for - at my school, Sophomores are able to take AP English, AP US, and AP Statistics altogether, and I know many of them do well, and their time management isn’t spectacular.

Just make sure to stay on top of things, school/homework comes before extracurriculars. Always.

What is the worst thing that can happen? You are already a senior so you don’t have to worry too much about your grades, except your first semester grades. If you bite off more than you can chew, your misery only lasts a year. Also you can drop extracurriculars if you need to, that’s why they’re called “extracurriculars”

So don’t worry, you will be fine. I think it’s good that you’re challenging yourself because then you’ll be a lot more ready for college than people who didn’t. You will be glad when you’ve seen stuff before and your classmates haven’t.
