Hey everyone! I’m a sophomore currently, and my school doesn’t offer ap classes … and I just asked the counselor, I can’t take it online. If I’m unable to take AP classes, will that affect my chances of getting into a college ( I will be applying to the University of Oxford, Harvard, etc) . Thanks in advance !
Seems like quote a bold statement, granted you’re just a sophomore.
For a UK university at the level of Oxford, yes. Of course for Oxford, you could self study AP’s, but you need to have ap scores of 5 to be considered.
For an American university, no. Your transcript will be evaluated in the context of what the HS offers.
What does your school offer? IB?/AICE? Dual enrollment/pseo/Cis/running start?
APs scores of 5 are basically mandatory for Oxford/Cambridge and other UK universities. How you get the 5 is your problem.
Before you focus on these world famous schools, try to figure out two schools that are affordable safeties and where you wouldn’t mind going - probably state universities with honors colleges.
Also, talk about costs with your parents.
Thank you for the advice!
Hi there @xoPrincessMariee ! I’m going to be honest here. It could work both ways:
If you are not offered AP courses and you can’t get 5s on the AP tests of the subject(s) you hope to study at Oxbridge (even if you would have to self-study for the AP exams), I don’t think you should apply because you will probably not be able to handle the workload. (Plus, your chances would be very, very, very low without all 5s.) However, if you get all 5s on AP exams you self-studied for, have some interesting accomplishments and have shown great interest in whatever it is you love, that’ll definitely be a plus factor for you.
Good luck with your applications!
PS @MYOS1634 The collective noun for Oxford and Cambridge is Oxbridge ;).
@Tomas1355 : I know full well (look under my name) but I try to avoid abbreviations and anything that presupposes knowledge when talking with 8/9/10th graders.
@MYOS1634 Oh yeah, woah, that’s a LOT of posts haha, great work! I see :-).
Thanks for the advice! At first I wanted to take the AP microeconomics test, but after figuring out that one test is $91 , I’ll do the SAT subject test instead. Do you all have any tips on self studying for the SAT subject test? I want to take the english, math, and chemistry subject tests.
