So, my school was going to offer an AP CS class over the summer, but it was dropped due to low enrollment. The teacher that was going to teach it agreed to lend me a textbook and some other materials to help me teach myself over the summer in place of taking the class. For people who have taken the class, do you have any tips or recommendations that may come in handy?

If you already have some background and can self study reasonably well, then it should be no problem for you. This was the case for me (my school doesn’t offer it) and I got a 5 on the exam last year.

I basically self-studied cs. Don’t just read the textbook, do the programming exercises as well because that will help you learn the concepts. In fact, I didn’t really read the book, I just looked at the examples and did programming problems. It’s like math…how often do you read the textbook? I find it best to learn by the examples, but that’s just me. Make sure you don’t forget to look at the case study!

Does anybody know a good intro to CS textbook or review book that I can look over in the summer? I am taking APCS next year with absolutely no prior experience with programming, and I would really like to get some basics down.

Hmm…other thoughts?

@manu101 I recommend Java Concepts by Horstmann. I used another book as well, but I forget which one it was.
