Hey everyone...I was just wondering if I could do well in AP comp. science without any experience with programming. Ive done 1 or 2 programs in my freshman year computer class but I dont think that really counts.

Yes. AP Computer Science is designed for students who have no prior computing knowledge. :)

I did not have any prior programming experience when I took AP Comp Science (I’m in it right now) but I did have an interest in computers so that kept me motivated. Once you get the basic concepts down it’s a lot easier to write programs. At first it’s a little confusing but with a good teacher and reliable textbook it should become easier. You have to think a little differently for this class (much more logically and in code) which I had difficulty getting used to but now I feel a lot more comfortable programming in front of a computer.

Do you guys recommend taking programming the summer before AP comp. sci.? Actually, I’m taking plain computer science as an elective next year…

Depends on how your school lays out the curriculum. At my school, APCS builds directly off of the Intro to Java Programming class, which means Intro was an absolute prerequisite (though the Intro. class was a complete joke. The 2 month class taught me the amount of java I self taught in less than a week during the prior summer. I just needed to take the class for APCS because the school said I must.).
However, its certainly possible that APCS at your school requires no prior experiences, as I know of intro to programming classes in college that’s certainly that. Teaching yourself some programming basics certainly won’t hurt, as preparation can only help you, and could help you determine if the class is right for you.

Taking the computer science elective isn’t a prerequisite for APCS, but if you want to take APCS, you either have to test into it or take comp. sci. as an elective the previous year.

also, what subject would APCS be classified as? Like Science, Social Studies or an Elective?

I’d call it an elective. My school requires taking Computer Programming I (HTML) and II (Intro to Java) in order to take AP CompSci (Java and Algorithm Study).
