So, something weird happened last year in school-I figured out that I really want to apply to some ivy league school. To do this, of course, I knew that one had to have at LEAST 1 AP each year (like the absolute bare minimum), which in my junior year I did. However, for my senior year, I was signed up for 3 AP's (technically 4-since I was going to take one outside of school) and they cancelled 2 of my in school AP's. this leaves me with one in school and one online AP. I want to take at the minimum three, but my counselor told me I don't need the rigor (even after I told her i'm applying to maybe yale and etc.)...I do not know if she knows what she's talking about.

Anyways, my point and question is...If I were to take the AP in school and one or two outside of school, would colleges still view my online AP's? Because I don't know if my counselor can make not of it if i take 2 outside of school (they'd be human geography + music theory). Or, do you think I should just take the one in school and let fate be? B/c i know yale is going to think i'm a slacker if i only take one lol. thoughts? help?

well if you are really serious about taking the AP tests...you could learn the material on your own. For example...im going to learn the AP Human Geo, AP Spanish Lit and AP Art History stuff on my own. Plus colleges look to see how you've used your schools existiong resources...so don't worry about it..good luck

Well, see, that's the thing--Our school offers somewhere around 12 AP classes, but many of which I cannot take due to the fact I am not 'advanced' in the subject (like AP calc and AP computer java i can't b/c i have no taken trig yet or computer sciencE). But other like AP bio and such my counselor told me NOT to take b/c it would be useless in college admissions...and i know they wouldn't be!! but the thing is, i wanted to change my schedule and everytime i tried, she stopped me..the deadline is long passed (4 days ago), so i can't do n e thing...but do you think it woudl be to my advantage to take some outside of school to show i still work hard? or will ivies/other good colleges not care.

if you can take some outside of school...you should!!! Counselors are always trying to stop you from taking too many APs b/c they dont think you can handle it. I signed up for 4(English Lang, Spanish, Gov and Econ) next year and i wanted to get art history and environmental science but she wouldnt let me. I took three this year so she thought 4 was ok. If you wanna major in something like Political Science(my future major) then taking science or math aps are useless somewhat...so think about it that way. My school offers almost ever AP the collegeboard tests but that doesnt mean someone takes all of them.

I suggest not wasting your time taking the online courses. The grades you get on the AP exams won't be on your transcript, so who cares? Unless you want to gain "advanced standing" and graduate yale/princeton/harvard in 3 or 3 & 1/2 years, there really is no need.

Take what classes you can, and be happy your school offers AP classes freshman and sophmore year. My school doesn't, and it's ranked #3 in my state overall, with average SAT scores around 1350-1400 ish out of 1600.

hahahahahahahhahaahah, you're funny. i never said my school offered AP classes freshman year. nor does my school offer them for sophomores (only extreme advanced sophomores). even for juniors, it's hard to take more than 2 (i took one)...most ap's are intended for seniors only...which stinks b/c colleges don't get to see your full potential.

"the deadline is long passed (4 days ago)"

How long do the schools you guys go to last? My last day was may 26.
(on topic) I don't see how any college can hold it against you for trying to beat the (school) system by taking as many ap's as you can, even if it's 1 or 2. Maybe you can explain it to them when you apply. If you want to do an online class, why not? I'd consider taking an ap exam for a class i'd like to take but that my school doesn't offer, but I wouldn't do something I don't like at all just to say i did independent study for an ap.

Don't believe your counselors, they usually tell you to not take anything hard, go against them and just do what you want. If that doesn't work get your parents to write a letter and your counselor will give in (she has to).

JUNE 23? oh, you poor child lol. that's halfway into our summer break (practically). but the thing is, my mom called in and the counselor wouldn't listen to her and my counselor is a big butt...idk like i don't want to murder myself next year, but i think 3 AP"s is a rigorous load. whatcha think?

oh and also its kinda more useful to take APs outside your intended major bc if you pass out of those classes you dont have to wrry about taking them in college...also a lot of colleges wont let you pass out of major classes
