AP Courses: Chemical Engineering

Hi! I am a high school junior and intend to major in chemical engineering. So far I've taken AP Euro and slated for AP US, AP Psych and AP English. I'm also taking pre calculus next year.

For my senior year, what AP classes should I prioritize? I plan to take AP Gov and AP Spanish Lit. I worry that taking AP chem would be a waste of money, as I have to take many more courses than that, same with AP Physics and AP Calc. I was considering AP Bio too.

Thanks in advance!

Actually, you should really take AP Chem since it does get you out of a lot of classes and it’s a really informative class. I plan to major in chem-e also, and I’m basically stacking up on science courses senior year. Definitely take chem; you won’t really need bio for your major, but I guess it can get you out of a few classes at college. Check the course requirements for a bachelor’s degree in chem-e at colleges you’ve been looking at to see what they want.

My ChemE son took AP chem, physics and bio. Even though he repeatedthe first 2 in college it still gave him a good foundation and the credits allowed him to register for higher level courses for which these were prereqs. And, you might change your major-- you never know. Take the some sciences. I think it might look a little odd that you took few if any AP science classes.

AP chemistry may get you out of first semester general chemistry at some schools (but try the school’s old final exams for the course before skipping). This could effectively give you a free elective later in your college schedule.

The same can apply to AP calculus AB or BC (up to a year for BC), AP physics C (not B or 1/2), or AP biology. Having more free electives means that you can take additional advanced courses in your major, or additional out-of-major courses of interest, or some combination of these.

AP scores in H/SS subjects (government, Spanish, etc.) may allow you to take more advanced in-depth H/SS courses instead of introductory level H/SS courses for your breadth requirements.

what??? makes no sense at all.

My chemE son took AP
chem
bio
calc
(his school didnt have physics)
euro
US
English
Govt

he decided to use his AP credits to skip, but some choose to retake if they want the review or dont feel that their high school foundation was enough.

the bottom line though is that you want as much foundation as possible…so take ap chem and calc.

Thank you all for the advice, I feel a lot better about it now :)
