AP Courses? Independent Study?

My school only offers 4 AP Courses, So far I am taking 1 in my sophmore year (even though, like many schools you can usually only take them in your junior or senior year.) Do you think I should see If I can take some independent study? All that is offered in my school is
- European History (Taking this year)
- Calculus (Can't take this until senior year because I am only going into Algebra II)
- Biology (well it is AP/UCONN Course, but I don't know why we weren't offered it as sophmores)
- Government (I have to take this my senior year in order to graduate, because by taking Euro I am missing a Civics class that is offered for sophmores, and it is nessecary to graduate)

What should I do? Does anyone have any suggestions for Idependent Study Courses that are not too hard without a teacher?

Depends on your skills ;) AP Physics is not going to be easy since you don't have Calculus skills yet.

The Human Geography AP exam is possible to take without having had a teacher; I didn't self-study, but I took the course and found that I easily could have. The topics are interesting and relatively easy to understand.

I've also known several people who took English Language AP without the course, but they were brilliant writers. If english is your strength, definitely consider the English Language exam. It does, however, have one of the lowest percentages of people who score 5's.

And don't forget - if you end up taking 4 or more years of a foreign language, be sure to take the corresponding AP.

At my school we have a special independent study program that with the help of a mentor, students design their own curriculum - and not just for AP exams. Kids designed projects in film, photography, cancer research; whatever. I wouldn't self study for a bunch of AP exams just to take them. But if you are actually thinking of taking independent study as a /course/ at your school, I can say it can be extremely rewarding; and as a bonus, looks great on college apps.

If you feel the need to take more AP tests (one or two, maybe, more, I don't know why), I agree with the other poster on taking the English exams if that is your strength (I think there are two - lang, and lit and comp). I think U.S. History, or anything else that's just memorizing the facts, would be an easy self study. I took the exam, most of what I got right I got out of a Kaplan's/Princeton Review book combo. Haha.

what techniques do you guys reccomend for self-studying?
i am planning on taking European History, English Literature and US Gov and Politics tests this year... my school only offers IB but i may study abroad senior year (and therefore not be able to complete IB), so i thought it might be a good idea to take a few AP tests...
when should you start studying? are the syballabus' on the CB website useful? what books are the best study guide wise?
