Im going to be a freshman next year at the university of alabama. I plan to major in chemical engineering then go to med school. I know that medical schools require you to take english, but with my AP credit i would not have to take any english courses to graduate from UA. Would a medical school accept this AP credit.

Each medical school makes their own rules. You have to search each individual school and before you ask.....NO. There is no comprehensive compendium of accurate current info available. Even if there was, rest assured your favorite would change the rules before you were ready to apply. ;)

^ while its true that each med school sets its own rules on the matter, I don't think I've ever seen one that actually accepts AP credit for pre-reqs.

The simple reason? AP courses are not equivalent to college courses.

^No, there are schools that allow it. Harvard lets one use some AP credits.

I didn't say they don't exist - I just said that they are very few and far between. Essentially, you can't do it, lest you extremely limit the number of schools you can even apply to (hint: terrible idea for med school admissions). Do you know of any others besides HMS?

Icarus, they are more likely to accept math AP's and sometimes English AP's for pre-req's. My own D will apply this next cycle with only AP BC credits and college statistics. She has a list of several dozen schools where this flies. Sometimes she has had to e-mail the schools and ask specific questions to get an answer as the material is nowhere to be found. Quite a byzantine system.

Why would she do it this way? I haven't the foggiest. She did the same type thing in UG admissions. Yale didn't require subject tests, Harvard did. She applied to Yale. "I'm not taking any more tests."

As far as the English requirement, she has AP credits, a freshman writing course, several w"writing intensive" courses, 2 dual credit Brit Lit courses on her transcript, and .......when I said she may need another she said ...."That's ignorant. I'm going to take Women in Chinese Literature instead". Independent little , isn't she?

Some will like her, some won't. She can live with that.

Icarus, off the top of my head , I know she talked to Baylor and all the other Texas med schools and they were cool with her plan. (And since there is a very good chance that she'll be going to one of those schools, she's fine with that fact that WashU seems like it may be a NO. (But I'm not even sure they won't accept it for math.)

Generally if the student's transcript reflects a college course equivalent class listed alongside the AP credit it will be accepted by many Med schools.

My son had no problem having his AP Chem, Bio and BC Calc count as classes taken toward the med school prerequisites at any school he applied to which included Stanford, Brown, and Columbia.

He was in a higher level calc class (intended for math majors) his freshman year and his med school adviser told him to drop it and take a statistics class instead to fulfill the one math class actually taken in college that most med schools look for.

The Texas med schools are actually some of the places that requires a math class be taken in college.

And that's why statistics appears on my D's transcript. ;)
