AP Credit for Foreign Languages

There's something that keeps bugging me about the AP Credit Reference Table here:

<a href="http://www.princeton.edu/pr/pub/ap/table.htm#note%5B/url%5D">http://www.princeton.edu/pr/pub/ap/table.htm#note</a></p>

They say that a score of 740 or higher on SAT II German is the equivalent of 2 units of AP credit. I suppose I can use these units for 2 introductory-level courses, for instance GER 101 and GER 102, so I can jump straight to GER 105. But the second footnote says: "In foreign languages, students who enroll in a 100-level course forfeit the use of both units of AP."

Does this mean that the 2 units of AP credit cover all 4 introductory-level courses? This doesn't seem right. The SAT II German seemed lower-intermediate to me, at most, so I should be able to enroll in GER 105 or 107. Or do I have to take the placement test, even though I've taken the SAT II in German?

Sorry if this seems like a silly question, but I'm pretty clueless about this AP credit thing. Hopeless international student :o. Any help appreciated.

Well, I got a 5 in AP Spanish, so I also received 2 units. However, in order to retain your AP units, you must start in a 200-level course. So therefore, I assume that those 2 units cover all 100-level classes.

Hope that helps.

Oh yeah, I was also wondering if I still had to take the placement test if I got a 5 on the AP exam. I emailed Pton and received no answer as of yet.

Anybody know?

If you don't want to take a 100 level language class, you do not need to take the placement test if you have a 5 on the ap test. In terms of the german, you might want to talk to the department. Units don't actually matter, and if you like german then you probably don't want to skip up to a 200 level class, but im not sure if you need to take a placement test.

thanks ec1234!

I don't really want to move to 200-level courses because I think I'm still an intermediate at German, but thanks for the input, everyone!

Do we still have to fulfill the language requirement if we got a five on the AP?
