I am confused about how to use my S’s AP credits for the HSS electives(9 required). We are trying to see if with his AP courses we can shorten the 4 year course to 3 year period because of cost constraints.
I have reviewed the AP link http://records.ureg.virginia.edu/content.php?catoid=43&navoid=3014#adva_exam
Most of the answers pertain to Arts and Science college as that is much bigger than SEAS and hence no info on SEAS is available.
Can the following 4 courses be used?
PSYC 1010 - 3 credits for AP Psychology
HIST 1000T - 3 credits for AP World History
PLAP 1000T - 3 credits for AP Government
ENWR 1000T - 3 credits in AP Language
He has the other Math/Science AP courses that we plan to use for the other required courses but the HSS electives are bothering us.
I am not sure of the HSS electives but I don’t believe you can shorten it to three years because of the prerequisites of each engineering class. My son got out of many first year classes but he still had to take Engineering Fundamentals and an engineering writing class that you cannot get out of with AP classes. They told him he could start taking masters classes his senior year but he would still need 4 years because they have their research paper class the senior year. You may want to check with someone from engineering but it seems that you can’t get that much ahead because of prerequisites. AP credit is much more valuable in the Arts and Sciences college then engineering to accelerate college. One other note on the math, if you have credit for AP Calculus BC it gives you credit for Calc1 and 2 in A&S but in the engineering school you only get credit for Applied Calc 1, even with a 5 on the AP test so the E-school kids with BC credit still have to take Applied Calc 2.
My guess would be that if these 9 credits are allowed and then counting other AP credits
3 for Calc BC, 6 for AP Chem, 6 for Physics C(both Mech and E&M) + additional Micro/Macro Econ 6 credit + 3 AP Comp Sci.
Sums up to 9+3+6+6+6+3=33 (approximately 2 semesters worth) Total requrirements are about 127 credits.
Things changed this past year because of the new curriculum. I was in your shoes last year and found the school to be very helpful. Call the arts and sciences office. Email the person listed on the credit transfer analyzer page. I don’t recall her name but will look later good luck
Yeah there are plenty of resources for Arts and Sciences, but a very few that clarify for Engineering School.
@“Dean J” , do you have any comment or feedback?
I really recommend calling the Engineering school or even someone in admissions who can guide you in the right direction. I also read in the engineering handbook that students need 128 credits to graduate which makes for a demanding schedule but it did say if a student has AP credits potentially they could take a lighter courseload during a semester but no more than 19. I can’t put the link here but google UVA Engineering handbook.
The Engineering major has to be declared after first year, so the first year subjects are to all majors and those are the ones that are mostly substituted with AP credit.
I am guessing that if a student has a FIRM decision about what major he wants to pursue when he enters the college in the first year, then he/she can start taking those 2nd year courses and eventually get done in three years.
Thank you @“Dean J” I tried contacting SEAS but I am not getting a definitive answer.
The below site has information but pertains to the college of arts and sciences and not Engineering, http://college.as.virginia.edu/area
It says that the they could towards elective credit and not general requirement.
Again, this is for the college and not SEAS.
SEAS terms the requirement as HSS “elective” they should count, but I am so confused. There is no information anywhere.
@eager2019 My son just finished his first year in the E school. I believe he was able to use all his AP credits towards HSS electives which was great. When he gets home later, I can ask him for more details.
ETA: I just looked up the AP exams he took. He got 5’s on all but the AP Chem, which he got a 4 on. I’m almost positive he was able to use all the English, history, and Stats credits as HSS credits. The Physics, Chemistry and Calculus ones got him out of E school classes.
