I got accepted to Wes last Saturday.
Does anybody understand how AP credits work at Wesleyan? I checked the policy and it perplexed me. You can only have up to 2 credits and you also have to take the required courses in order to get the credits(for most AP). How does that even work? I don’t understand.
Thanks for any feedback!
I need this information to help me decide where to go.
As far ask can tell, this means that before Wesleyan will award you AP credit for a course that you took in high school, you have to at least take the minimum number of required courses in the Wesleyan department that covers that subject matter. For example, if you want credit for AP English, you have to take English 201(and pass it, of course.) Does that make sense?
I’m a recent alum who can help if you have questions about specific departments or certain AP courses you are thinking of using. But yes, you are limited to 2 credits (that’s 2 semester-long courses worth, not just 2 credit hours). Are you thinking of graduating early? For what are you looking to use the AP credits?
I guess. So after taking the required course at Wes, I will get the AP credit in addition to the course credit?
@smartalic34 I’m not really thinking of graduating early. I just want to make use of my credits. I have 5s in WH and USH. That’s it. I self studied both of them.
Yes. That’s the way I read it. Btw, I was wrong in the example above (another reason you should double-check any advice you get on CC.) The English Dept. does not require any specific courses in order to receive AP credit. But the History Dept. does require that you take at least one course above the introductory level and, if you want credit for two AP History courses (e.g., WH and USH)), you have to take one Wesleyan course for each:
https://wesfiles.wesleyan.edu/departments/Reg/AdvancedPlacement/Public/AdvPlacement.pdf
"A student who completed an Advanced Placement course in secondary school and has achieved a score of 4 (honors) or 5 (high honors) in the Advanced Placement examination may be awarded credit after satisfaction of the relevant department’s requirements. "
I didn’t actually complete any AP courses because my school doesn’t offer any. I just self studied WH and USH and got 5s. Does that still count?
My S self-studied English and got a 5, and they accepted without question, so I think they only look at the number. And by the way, its a simple process of filling a very short form out on line during your 4 years. This is nothing that you need to do going in.
