Hello All,

I have read on Vanderbilt's website about their AP credit policy but I am still confused. It said somewhere that they will accept up to 18 credits. After looking at the chart, I already have 24 and I am taking 3 more tests this year. I am not sure how AP credit works with AXLE... is it possible to test out of certain classes? Currently I have 5's in APUSH, AP Language and AP Biology and a 4 in AP Euro. This year I am taking Calc AB, AP Gov and AP Chem. I plan on majoring in something pre-med (bio or chem). Will I be able to test out of Lit or History general courses? Any help from previous students or parents on this topic?

I know that you cannot use AP credits to fulfill AXLE requirements. You can use them to take a higher level course to fill an AXLE requirement. Vandy will apply up to 18 AP credits towards the 120 credits required to graduate and they will be listed on your Vandy academic record.

A 5 in AP Bio gives you credit for Baby Bio (I think it's 101). Unfortunately, for pre-med, you have to take 110, which will cancel out the credit for 101. So basically the AP credit (at least for bio) gives you nothing

I, too, am trying to understand the AP credit thing. Can the 18 hours of AP credits be applied towards the major requirements, or do they simply mean that you take the same number of course hours but in more advanced classes. I know they do not apply to AXLE requirements. Do they just apply towards elective hours?
Speaking of AXLE, I read that there is a 3 course requirement in foreign language. Is that correct or did I misunderstand? Also, do current students find the AXLE requirements onerous or no big deal? Thanks.

Unless AXLE has changed, I believe you only have to take two semesters of foreign language. D had 2 semesters of her language (10 hours) prior to study abroad and had fulfilled her AXLE requirement there. She ended up taking a third course as an elective while abroad.

One word of caution: Courses deemed to meet AXLE requirements have changed annually since AXLE replace CPLE 3 years ago. Keep all printed materials that you receive regarding what counts when you enter until after you get your diploma and final transcript. If you take a course that counts and it later changes, the online site for the registrar's office may not recognize it and they will have to do some sort of override. D had this happen with two different classes and she started working with the registrar's office on the issue last fall. She said they were very nice and acknowledged her issue, but evidently it kept reverting to a not completed status for her. She announced last week that it finally appears to be resolved for good.

You need three courses in "International Cultures" (or some title like that) Languages are generally included in this category, but there are other courses you can take. Also, you are required to have one second semester college language course. If you get a 4 on an AP test or a certain score on an SATII, it will count for your language requirement, but you will still have to take the 3 courses in international cultures.
