I am accepted to the U of M, and will most probably do the honors program. I want to major in chemistry and eventually want to go to a good med school (will be taking pre med). I took many AP classes and took the exams. I got a 5 on the chem exam. will be taking the biology, calc bc and physics c exams this year. should i use any of this credit? would it help me, or would it put me at a disadvantage? should i "retake" those subjects in college just so i get better a better GPA? I am really confused.

I would ask your AP teachers. However, if you feel secure enough to move on, why waste money on more credits? However, being a senior in high school, I’m sure I don’t have the best insight. Talk with a teacher or counselor, or maybe a college academic advisor (although I wonder if they would tell you to retake the class because the school gets more money).

It depends if the medical school you apply to accepts AP credit or not. Michigan State College of Human Medicine accepts it. Most elite schools (I’m 90% sure U of M as well) DON’T accept AP credit or ANYTHING taken during high school. I know someone at MSU Honors who was accepted into MSU college of Human Med and she had AP credits but retook the classes just to be safe, and well she’s been admitted to med school. She told me to retake the classes “just to be sure.” That’s what I’m going do.

UMich does take AP credit, but scores vary from test to test. [Office of Undergraduate Admissions: AP Guidelines](AP, IB Credit | University of Michigan Office of Undergraduate Admissions)

I’m also wondering whether or not to take credit for courses I’ve taken, but I’ve constantly been told that it’s a better idea not to if it feeds into your selected major. Both because AP courses are sometimes not as rigorous as the actual college course and because the intro grades can really boost your GPA, still not sure what I’ll do either.
