AP credits

can anyone explain on how ap credits work in terms of waiving courses and getting units for graduation? is there a site for that? btw, im a bio major in the college of letters and science. thanks!

yeah... there are about 239342 million threads about this.

that being said, i still don't really understand what can be used and what can't...

either way, good luck figuring it out :)

In a nutshell, most of the AP credits are coounted as overall units, and can NOT be substituted for graduation requirements in general ed.

However, there are exceptions. AP Calculus A/B and B/C are fully transferrable and do not have to be retaken if you pass the AP test with a score of 3 or better. I believe that AP English and Foreign Languages are also accepted.

I think a 4 or 5 on AP Psych gets you credit for Psych 10

yep :)
here's the letters/science link for AP credit: http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/APCreditLS.htm
some exams will just give you general credit, but generally with higher scores, you can get credit for certain classes.

I know that at UCSD, people are forced to use AP credits that they have. Is that the case for UCLA as well? Since I'm also thinking pre-med, I don't want to test out of general chem even though I did get a 5 because some med schools don't take AP Credit. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

^don't worry, you wont get any credit for chem.

S received AP credit for government and US history in terms of GEs.

what does it mean when it says "unassigned"?

means you get credit that counts for graduation (say, you're 4 units closer to the amount you need to graduate) but that credit doesn't count for a specific class.
better than nothing, however, because it gets you closer to sophomore standing as a freshman :)

If I score an 3-5 on the Calculus AB test next month, can I decline the credits and retake the class at UCLA? I'm premed and I plan on taking as little math as possible, so could testing out of Calculus or 31a force me to take higher level mathematics?

i think you can retake the class. i know a guy who got a 5 on calc ab but retook it here just for extra review before 31b.
not sure how the credits work, but i believe you aren't banned from taking the class. he is engineering however.

Why would you want to decline the credits and retake the math class if you want to take as little math as possible? Why not move ahead to the next class in the series so as to get it all behind you faster?

Well, moving ahead means having to take multi variable calc and Linear Algebra while if one starts back at learning derivatives, then he/she could stop before they hit linear algebra and complete the math requirements for med/grad school.

yah... it's not how FAR you get ultimately... it's how many quarters you take in college.
so AP credits don't count for med schools, they want to see math you actually took at your college.
...hence why repeating an AP class at college is such a desirable option xD

If you follow the Pre-Med route, you won't have to worry about repeating AP math courses, at least Calculus.

You will most likely take the 3-series if you want the easy way out, which you are not granted credit from any scores of AP.

However, if you are a prospective engineering student, your hopes should be to score a 5 on Calculus BC, so you can start with Multivariable Calculus (assuming you haven't taken CC math courses beyond that).

This is my recommendation.

That's the one for people in HSSEAS. It says that a 5 on Calc BC only gets you out of 31A. Is this correct? If what BoelterHall says is correct... wouldn't that mean a 5 gets you out of 31A / 31B?

Hmm... according to UCLA's site... if you are in L&S, a 5 on the Calc BC gets you out of both 31A / 31B, but if you are in HSSEAS... you only get 31A =[.

^link for all colleges

EDIT:
Hmm... and for AP Physics C... I guess getting anywhere between a 3-5 for both sections only gets you unit credit. I thought getting a 5 on Mechanics would get me out of Physics 1A or w/e. I think it was like that at Cal.

loses motivation to get higher than a 3 on physics ;]

MUST GET A 5 ON CALC BC THO!

Dumb question-but I don't know and I am curious--with 3-5 on AP exam/credit earned--does that then corrolate to a grade of 3:c 4:B 5:A for your GPA?

AP exams give you credit for graduating, and sometimes can give you credit for certain courses (ie psych 10), but they DO NOT factor into your GPA. you just get the units xD

What's the point of the units that don't go towards a GE, especially for engineers? And here I thought taking AP French was actually worth something...
