Next year, I’m considering taking AP English Language and Composition during my junior year.
But I suck at writing, and it’s probably my worst subject. In addition to that, I have a lot of trouble with analyzing texts. Not to mention, my vocabulary is pretty adequate, too.
The reason why I’m still considering taking this class is because I’m hoping it will force me to improve all of the above.
Will it be worth it to take this class? Will it be too hard for me?
I would go talk to the AP Lang teacher at your school and see what they think about the rigor of the class and whether you’d be able to handle it. Although APs are supposed to be standardized, I think it depends a lot on the teacher/school.
I have one kid who’s a natural writer and one who thought English was the worst. Our AP Lang teacher is exceptional and both of them excelled in his class (and the one who used to hate English still says “not my favorite” but no longer hates it). At a neighboring school, though, we hear that kids drop from AP Lang like flies. It really just depends.
I was really bad at writing too but I took the class and got a high A in it. I thought it was really easy and a lot easier than the previous honors English classes that I had taken.
I agree with @zbthsjunior. Honestly, I think AP Lang is probably one of the most beneficial classes I’ve ever taken (and I’m going to be a STEM major). I just felt like I overcame a huge obstacle. I would at least go to class the first day and see how it’s going to be.
