AP English Language and Composition

Hello i am a sophomore that will be taking AP English Language and was wondering what books people have read in that class?

We read (or were supposed to read, although nobody did, including me) The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, some other random stuff…

Most people, me included, relied on Sparknotes. Lang and Comp isn’t really about what you HAVE read, although reading a lot probably would be beneficial.

We read essays from “100 Great Essays” compiled by DiYanni. It really helped us, as we came across essays on the exam that we read in class.

But Lang and Comp is more about Comp…

Don’t take the exam. AP Lang is an exam where if you don’t already get ~40/55 on the m.c. you can’t get a 5. It’s really really hard to improve on the m.c.

Hm… Everyone was supposed to read The Scarlet Letter (Hawthorne), The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Walden (Thoreau), and Civil Disobedience (Thoreau). Then we got to choose from a list of other books, and I ended up reading Band of Brothers and My Antonia (Cather). Other choices includes Flags of Our Fathers, The Jungle, and The Bluest Eye.

We read a mixture of literature such as The Great Gatsby, Middle Passage, Ragtime, and non-fiction essays / novels (mainly essays) such as MLK’s Birmingham letter, JFK’s speech, and a variety of other famous essays.

We’ve read the Scarlet Letter, about to read a Street Car Named Desire, we’ve read stories by Ernest Hemmingway, modernist writers, Thoreau, Emerson, etc, etc.

Why don’t you go to the AP English Language and Composition description and see a list of suggested readings?
