Hey guys, what happens if on the Free Response we COMPLETELY misinterpret a poem but then we back up our own misunderstood argument extremely well? Cuz I think that’s what I did today… I need a 5 on this test to get credit at my university!

Oh lord!! good question haha
I bet if you did a really good analysis…and you only did that one one…you should be fine! haha
as long as they others were good and you did decently well on the mc
They’ll take off a point or two for the misinterpretation…but they won’t dock huge amounts on a well written analysis haha

yea quality over quantity but look at the SAT essays. ppl say there is a correlation between length and score.

I wrote only 5/8 of a page for #1 and #2 but 2.5 pages for #3. I write pretty small and I’m a really concise writer, but I feel really insecure having written so little compared to people writing three pages each. Our teacher didn’t prep us for the AP test, just improving our writing, and so I wasn’t sure how to tackle the poem and prose. I just followed instructions by analyzing how the author does such and such…

Were we expected to write four paragraph essays on #1 and #2 also? =(

Hey, so my teacher was the most amazing ever–

we wrote 16 essays which he graded and gave us advise

16 individual one passage practices

4 full length multiple choice AP tests

I got 8s on the essays, sometimes 7s, and average -10 questions on the MCs

(I absolutely love this subject and it’s the one thing I’m semi-good at)

today I screwed up sooooooooo much though, especially on the essays–I’ll be lucky if I get 6s. I don’t know what the heck happened but it’s rather upsetting

it makes me feel better to vent here. haha

haha don’t worry…I bet you did fine
I was in the same boat lol
Our teacher didn’t like do AP prep really…we just did literature crap all year lol
so somehow I went in feeling completely unprepared but after opening and starting the MC…I felt like I somehow learned stuff this year! hahaha
and yeah we never did any AP essays…not one lol
just a few essays over poems or literature or books we’ve read and such…nothing AP directed haha
but I don’t even know what is exactly expected on that hahaha

I pretty much concur with all of you guys. The MCQ was a joke (and had nice passages that were easy to read).

My FRQ1 and FRQ2 were both pretty solid, I think. I talked about tone shifts a lot though.

I also didn’t cover POV or structure for the second essay but instead focused entirely on the nuances of diction. Is that a problem?

I probably wrote the most out of this thread though. I only left one sheet in the whole booklet blank.

I like that curve.
Gahh! I want a 5!

DillonJay, we also did a LOTTT of literature…we read 12 novels w/analysis questions, journals, etc etc etc. It was crazy. I’m pretty sure my teacher was the best AP lit teacher ever. Daily discussions too, and the class was just so enjoyable!

and then I mess up on the OPEN essay, out of all of them -__- ughh whatever. I’m a senior so just happy to be doneeeeeeeee! except for euro tomorrow :|

Was I the only one who assumed the song poem thing was literally about death?

I wrote about the Aeneid

…which is a little odd considering I’ve only ever read it in the original Latin, not English o_o oh well, if they count the Odyssey, they should count the Aeneid. Works really well for the prompt, anyways

Hey so on that passage about the Race or chase or whatever, what did you put the breathing represented? life or peace or love? i put life

Was I the only one who assumed the song poem thing was literally about death?

I thought it was pretty much the guy comforting his girlfriend before going on a trip. it wasn’t all about death. She was worried something would happen to him, though, and he comforts her by saying they’ll never be separated, even if something does happen…

I put life as well.

Can anyone answer my question as to whether or not we were expected to write full essays (with thesis and body paragraphs and conclusion) on FRQ #1 and #2? I simply wrote an analysis paragraph < 1 page.

Yes, you are expected to have a fully developed essay. Thesis = most important part.

@ Tegvl62…hahaha yesss that’s exactly how my class was!
I HATE literature honestly, but my teacher was SO awesome as well! She’s insanely outgoing and HILARIOUS lady lol it’s impossible not to love her
She just made the class so much better hahahaha
I still hate literature…but I loved her
We did do lots of that too…just never geared towards AP so I had no clue what to expect lmao
but when I got there…it wasn’t like foreign to me or anything…I had just never written essays exactly like that lol

Would it matter if we started our essays halfway through the test booklet? I started writing after ripping out the insert with the questions and never thought to turn back to the first page…

Sigh, I wish my teacher had told me that. Instead I just followed the instructions and analyzed how the author achieved __ through the use of _, _, and __.

well actually nevermind lmao it seems y’all did do more ap prep! hahaha
but still…
and I am not a fan of english lol I like science, math, and spanish :)

“Was I the only one who assumed the song poem thing was literally about death?”

Nope.
Even if that assumption was wrong I think there was only one question that asked about the literal meaning of the poem. The rest were specific lines/grammar questions.

in the mc?? yeah I thought it was about death too lol
but true haha none but one really asked that lol
