AP English Literature.. tomorrow

yo meng, where did u get the 1994 test

Given by the teacher, the only one he had unfortunately.

oedipus and antigone may be good for a few essay topics

oedipus was da bomb. = )

My teacher said that a good way to prepare for the open-ended (which, really, is the only thing one can "prepare" for the Lit exam other than studying literary terms, something I'm surprising not worried about) is to have 4 or 5 books that are diversed enough (time period, themes, writing styles) under your control. I'm picking Oedipus, Hamlet, Heart of Darkness, Things Fall Apart, and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (or Waiting For Godot, even though R&G would be a better pairing if I'm reviewing Hamlet). I might throw in 1984, All Quiet On the Western Front/A Farewell to Arms, and/or The Scarlet Letter just for good measure.

Anyhow, good luck to all! :)

My List (which I am sparknoting to refresh my memory tonight):

Importance of Being Earnest (in case of comedy, also social commentary)
Metamorphosis (social commentary, existentialism)
Hamlet/Macbeth (tragic heros, character conflicts)
Huck Finn (never know when it'll come in handy)
Heart of Darkness
Crime and Punishment (works for lots of stuff, suggested every yr...character conflict)

I already know Oedipus pretty well, so that'll be a part of my arsenal.
I'm actually excited to see what the question is, lol. I also think the m.c. is rather fun to do.

Is Lord of the Flies considered "of literary merit"? I know it isn't on the "recommended" list, but my class covered it extensively this year.

my list...which i plan to spark sometime in the next 7 hrs (hopefully):
crime and punishment
invisible man
gulliver's travels
heart of darkness
wuthering heights
...
i seriously don't remember any specifics...and it's such a pain to spell those russian names

lord of the flies is great for the AP

Just took the AP Lit Exam. Studied the following:
A Doll's House
The Handmaid's Tale
Antigone
Their Eyes Were Watching God
Macbeth

It was fine.

which did you use?

Their Eyes Were Watching God would've been a great pick.

I actually did use Their Eyes Were Watching God. :)

hm, I don't know. I got fives on both the AP English exams, and I did not review any specific books. I took three practice multiple choice exams for each. My teacher gave us old open-ended questions periodically throughout the year, so I felt prepared to write the essays under pressure. But as far as reviewing specific books go? I think (and I always used to hate it when people said this, so I apologize in advance) the best way to prepare is just to have an broad reading background. Good luck!

I studied The Stranger, Hamlet, Macbeth, Heart of Darkness, Wuthering Heights, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead, The Salt Eaters, 1984, and Gulliver's Travels. I ended up writing on Hamlet.

heyyy i used hamlet as well.
i got kinda worried afterwards when i heard that everyone else i know used To the Lighthouse, buti still think my argument was solid.
who else totally <3333s shakespeare and hamlet?
:)

I studied Siddhartha and wrote about Siddhartha. Surprise? Well, I was hoping not.

Ah, nice.. How exactly did you make it fit, Nom? I think I get the general idea; it seems fun to work with. I had just read the book too, but I didn't even think about it during the exam.

So I went straight down the list, and choose A Doll's House.

things fall apart all the way!!!!!!!!!!!! my best prepped bk got the job done

@Knavish: How did I make it fit? Not as well as I had hoped. I won't go into detail on a public forum (Trinity is watching you), but I can say that I alluded to several periods of Siddhartha's life and why he transitioned between them. It wasn't my best essay- I was a bit short on time, as usual. My first essay, though, was truly "beast." I wish the test proctor had let me take a copy of it home.

I thought the multiple choice was hellish.......

As for the last essay, I'm guessing we all had the same prompt....I used The Things they Carried; seemed to fit really well

I had taken a multiple choice diagnostic test the day before the exam. I didn't do too well, to say the least, pulling a sad 37%. Ouch. It was grueling and frustrating beyond belief. But. . . for some inexplicable reason, I was well within my comfort zone on the actual test.
