Suggestions for my "book report"

Hey all... I need to choose a novel of "literary merit" for my AP english class... have to read it and then find three criticisms of it, write about them, etc...

And I know that I'll pretty muh never willfully read classic literature for pleasure, so I like to make these assignments count...

So what do you guys like? Some of my favorites have been The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and Black Boy

I just found out how to use italics on CC, so I kind of went overboard... I realize that :)

Heart of Darkness.

Also, Chinua Achebe has a famous essay on this novel.

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a very good book!

The Great Gatsby! It's so short, yet packed full with literary merit. You can't ever go wrong with that book! (unless of course the question 3 on the AP test is random enough to ask about a COUNTRYSIDE!!!)

Sorry about that last part lol.

"War and Peace" is a nice, short, and enjoyable read.

haha yeah, go with war and peace. jk i'd go with The Great Gatsby as erhswimming said or The Catcher in the Rye

hmmmm maybe Huck Finn or Native Son both have lit merit and re pretty good books.

The Great Gatsby is pretty good.

I also recommend The Catcher in the Rye. It's a great book!

Read Albert Camus's "The Outsider" (The Stranger in some translations)

It's a really short read- only like 120 pages and it's written in a really simple and clean style that's not hard to understand.

I love The Stranger! It's one of my favorite books!

Yes! It is my favorite out of all the books I've ever read, and that's quite a lot.

I love the work of Albert Camus!

Me too. He's the greatest. It's such a shame he died young.

I know! He achieved so much in so little time!

Indeed. That's what's so incredible.

His views were also very revolutionary. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his writings against capital punishment.

I know. I've read almost all of his works and several biographies, I'm still working on a few of his plays. The ideas he puts out there are so amazing.

I admire him most for his support of human rights and his pacifism.

Agreed. The play I'm reading right now discusses the issue of terrorism. It's called "The Just Assasins" and follows Russian revolutionaries as they are planning to assassinate a tyrannical duke. I'm not very far, but its so interesting.
