AP Exams and How to Tell Colleges You Will or Will not Attend?

Good morning. :)

I am a high school senior and right now I'm deciding which AP exams I should take. I already know the college that I will attend next fall so is it fine if I decide not to take some exams that won't result in college credit? My English teacher, when I told her I was not going to take the exam, stated that even though some colleges do not accept the exam as placement out of a first-year English course, it is still helpful to take because "it looks good on your record." I'm not sure, but I doubt the validity of this statement. What employer, graduate school, or professional school looks at high school work? Moreover, does it matter whether I become "National AP scholar" or not? I realize that a junior with that award would find it more useful, but as a senior with my college in hand, would it be a useless award, serving as only a gimmick?

Next, how can I notify colleges that I will not attend their school next fall? Should I contact the admissions office of that school via e-mail? If the university gave me a scholarship, should I contact the scholarship office that I will not accept it? I'm not going to do this right now because I still haven't officially enrolled in the college I will attend, but I just wanted to know how to go about doing this.

How would I notify a college that I will attend? Should I just send the deposit? Should I write a thank-you letter/e-mail to the admissions office? If I received a scholarship from them, should I e-mail "thanks" to the scholarship office?

Thank you very much! :)

You don’t need to take ANY APs to “look good on your record”. If you know where you’ll be attending in Sept and don’t see value in a particular AP test for eventual college credit, then don’t take it. Period.

If accepted, the school has directions on how to officially enroll. Read thru your acceptance package again.
