If you don't do well on your AP exams, how much will that hurt your application as a whole?

It won't hurt at all. You will know that you are accepted before you get the grades, if you take them this year.

and if you took them last year?

Ask your college counselor to take the grade off your transcipt (its called "not reporting" your scores). However-- something to consider is that if you took more than one AP test, all the counselor does is take a sharpee and draw a line through the grade you don't want reported (so you'll have a couple scores, a black line, and then a couple more scores). I'd ask your counselor to see what s/he suggests.

the only thing that i could think would be if you were to send them then they could possibly be used agianst you or they could help you depending on your scores so...it may just be best not to report any of them at all.

I thought colleges don't receive AP scores until a student is accepted and pays the fee to have it sent to them?

I think to officially send your scores in you have to pay the college board (you would send your scores so to receive credit at your college). But at my school (and I presume at others) your scores are listed on your transcipt, along with SAT scores and PSATs.
