Is there any benefit of taking both? Like an idiot I decided to take both (it’s in one class and I just have to do AP and IB coursework) but now I don’t think it’s worth it take the AP test since the IB test is already required. Is there any benefit of all or would it just be more stress to take the AP test?
Interesting question–
Is the IB test going to be at SL or HL? If you’re class truly is a mixture of AP/IB French (and hence is preparing you essentially for both exams), I would take both. If you score a 4 or a 5 on the AP exam, some colleges will then waive the foreign language requirement. However, regarding the IB test, colleges generally require a 6 or 7 on only HL to waive the requirement.
My D’s Spanish class is doing both. I like it that she will get a higher AP award (probably with distinction) along with her IB Diploma.
You can take one or both if you need to show some level of proficiency in French before college.
In college, the French department may use the scores of either test to recommend placement in French courses. However, it may also have its own placement tests that do not depend on AP or IB scores, since many will have French knowledge otherwise (e.g. heritage speaker or high school course work that is not AP or IB).
At colleges with a foreign language graduation requirement, a high enough AP or IB score may indicate a high enough level of proficiency to fulfill some or all of such a requirement.
