If your daughter or son took the AP French (language) exam last week, you need to know that there has been a problem with the test. Schools are being notified one by one, so many don't know yet and the resolution isn't clear yet either.
It appears that some questions in the first section weren't timed right and didn't allow adequate response time for the first 7 of them! What is known now is this: (A)one option is that they can take the entire exam AGAIN on May 20th or (B), they don't know! It could be that they won't count those 7 or that they figure out some alternate method of scoring, but as of now, that hasn't been announced.
My D loves French and is planning on taking a double major in it with her Vocal Performance major, but this was more than she bargained for! There was a problem on one of my teacher certification exams- timing of response questions, of course, and I jokingly told D to make sure that all was well with her's... who would believe that this would have happened to her. I'll keep you posted, but if anyone hears anything more, please post.

Whoa, seriously? I took the AP French Language exam last week. Are you talking about the listening section? Do you know how big of a difference it was? I wonder what they’ll do. I’d rather not take the exam again!

Yes, it’s the listening section. D’s school is really small so they can’t store the exams and ship them right back, which is why they were notified already. Nothing has been said about another scoring option yet, but they were told that 5/20 would be the date to re-take the test if one wanted to. D doesn’t want to take it again either!

There is already a discussion about this issue, first posted by one of the “head honchos” of CC. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ap-tests-preparation/710732-ap-french-language-re-take-option.html

Thanks! Missed it completely!

Please note that colleges require placement tests for continuing foreign languages, the AP exam score will not matter for this. Also, one doesn’t have to take any AP exams to count HS courses in meeting college foreign language reqs. The AP score may matter if it means getting college credits. It also means nothing to current seniors in being accepted into a college.

wis75, some colleges take the AP test scores in lieu of a placement test so it does matter to some.

At Yale, for example, if you score a 5 on the AP you don’t have to take Yale’s French placement test.
