If I DON'T want credit at all for chem, will the 4 hurt me? I don't think I'll use most of my AP scores to get credit regardless of what they are, I'm looking at it in a purely admissions point of view.

Oh and Columbia College Bulletin
If I were to look for advanced standing at my top choice it looks I could get the same credit with a 4. They actually have lower standards for chem than bio. Interesting.

Nope, a 4 definitely won't hurt you. Anything above a 3 is usually good, and neutral at worst. It won't hurt you, but it might not help you significantly either. A 4 is a good score, and indicates that you mastered most of the material on the test, so be happy! Colleges recognize the time and effort that go into studying for exams, and look at them in conjunction with your record. If chem is a subject you're interested in, this AP can only help your record, combined with your transcript.

Amen! Whether or not a particular institution awards credit for a 4 (and most do ; though not all), thirdfloor's comments have injected a much-needed dose of sanity into this discussion.

I have worked in admissions for more than two decades. What she says here is absolutely true. So those of you with 4's on AP tests, give yourself a pat on the back and then go find something else to do besides obsess over this. (If you're stuck for ideas and live near Western MA, you can come mow my lawn :))
