Ugh, it takes me anywhere from 6-8 hours to do my outlines for AP World and they're usually 7-10 pgs in length. First I read each section and lightly underline with my pencil any important ideas and then I go back and type it into my outline. I feel like I'm not doing it right since it takes me a long time and my outlines are too long. How do you guys outline for AP history?

read it- scribble in my notebook whatev i feel is important- then go to bed.
if you have a text book- 3 ideas for one heading
outlines don’t matter since you’re going to read the book before the test anyway

really? for AP euro it takes me around 3 hours…and we have around 17 pages everyday lol.
but, i don’t go back to type mine…so maybe that’s why?

What my teacher for APUSH does is this:

It’s basically an asymmetrical box with 4 spaces for: Notes, Critical Questions, Implications, and Quotes/Queries.

Notes: Your notes. Never use full sentences, just short phrases. Color code for themes, important figures, events, laws, and so forth.

Critical Questions: Write down questions that can be answered by your notes.

Implications: Bring your critical questions and answers together and write down what ultimately occurred at the proverbial end of the day.

Quotes/Queries: Interesting quotes or questions you have. It could be a question on a picture from the text, a remarkable quote from some important figure, or just whatever sparks your interest.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

I read the chapter once, without writing anything down. The second time I read it, I jot down all the important Proper Noun-esque things I may be able to use in an essay or something. Like I’d list:

Jefferson’s Embargo
Macon’s Bill No. 2
Declaration of War (1812)

I don’t think outlines should be lengthy summaries, and 7-10 pages is pretty excessive. I also use my list of key ‘IDs’ (what my teacher calls them) to review for tests. Basically, I should know what every one of them is.

I did the exact same thing you did when I took AP World (and it took the same amount of time, except mine was 10-11 pages in length for each chapter, and we had to submit it through turnitin.com). You’re pretty much guaranteed a 5 when you do that.

I read the section first. Then, I go back, skim through what I just read, and jot down any key points (& stuff I know that I won’t remember). Trust me – a lot of the stuff you read in history books, you already semi-know and only need a refresher. My outlines usually end up being 2-4 pages and take around 3 hours.
