AP Human Geography 2009 Official Thread

Where 99% will probably self-studying.

What worries me is that according to CB, only 11% get 5s -- the same as APUSH.

So some things to get us started:

What books did you get? How are they? Would you not recommend any? How far are you in the studying? Any good websites/sources that you really recommend?

Questions can go here too.

I got Barron's, but I'm also getting Ethel Woods and Rubeinstein which the "yeah, I read it 2 afternoons before and got a 5" people would say is overkill. But it's better to be safe than sorry. So far Barron's is OK, but I can't give any recommendations because I haven't taken the test yet =P.

I've read through the entire book, and I'm just going to reread again and again. I've heard that Barrons is too "general" (that's why I bought the other "overkill" elements) -- it's important to have examples ready too.

For concepts, can anyone explain to me the difference between the core-periphery model and the world-system theory? I don't think I get the paragraph explaining the differences. ...

I haven’t yet decided whether I’m going to take it or not. I probably will…

The more the merrier :)

According to the overachievers here on CC, it wouldn’t be too late until “2 afternoons before the exam” when you can pick up the Barrons, read it, and get a 5. xD

Let’s hope they’re right!

Don’t forget that a majority of the AP Human Geography test-takers are freshman!
That’s my reasoning why I’m doing the self-studying-for-a-5, not just a 4.

I’m using Barrons right now, and it seems to get the job done. =]

I’m using the new 2009 Barron’s. Seems sufficient so far as I do quite well on the practice quizzes the end of each chapter. However, we will see how the full lenth practice exam plays out.

I’m using the Barron’s book. It’s boring me soo much…

It’s true that Human Geography has one of the lowest AP score average, if not the lowest, out of all the AP tests. But I think that’s because a majority of the test takers are freshmen (check the AP report), who are new to the AP system. So don’t worry about the statistics too much.

Does this human geography test get you out of any class in most colleges?

I’m taking it for the elective hours rather than to place out of any class.

Oh. That works.

Oh, never knew that. OK, not freaking out again =P. Ha, freshmen are nubs haha

What study guides you guys using?

Using ethel woods, rubenstein and barrons. think I may be overkilling. Oh well.

Right, what does “10char” mean?

Thanks :)

Every post has to be at least 10 characters long so when people feel like posting things like “yes” and “correct” they add something to make it “10char”

Yeah…I took it as a Freshman (got a 4 -_-)

Thanks raller! That clears a lot of things up :)

@ ansar – If I got a 4 as a *freshman/i, I wouldn’t be worried about it. 1) You’re a freshman 2) 4 is “sufficient” and 3) it’s your first AP.

Keep it up! :)

still a bit worried :).

What books is everyone else using? How effective is it for you?

(I am such a nub when it comes to study prep books)

So far I only have Barron’s, but I’m thinking about getting the Ethel Wood book. Has anyone ever used the Barron’s flash cards? I might get those too, but I don’t know if they would be necessary.

I was thinking about getting flash cards, but then they cost too much and there’s the econ crisis here and so … I’m going to make my own :).

Though flashcards don’t really work well for me anyways.

Yeah, I think I’m probably am just going to make my own…I don’t feel like spending any more money on AP test stuff.

All this spending makes me wonder whether it’s really worth it in the end :(.

Apparently we still have to take the courses (hence not save money), but only have to take harder courses (hence endangering our grades and NOT skipping classes at all?)

I am spoiled enough to have bought Ethel Woods as well as Rubeinstein’s study guide.

I’ve flipped through it so far, and I have one word to describe the action of buying anything more than Barrons:

Overkill.

But that’s just from a flip. But so far I see … well one or two new things. But it’s not worth … $50! + freaky shipping!
