***Official AP Human Geography Thread 2014-2015***

Pretty excited to learn about Human Geo. How is everyone else preparing for this class? For those who already took the class / test, how is it?

The test was extremely easy. I only read the review book the night before/quizlet and got a 5 (I would not advise this as a self study method). I have a lot of outside knowledge as I took the AP US Government (on the same day), AP Biology (ecology is similar to migration patterns and similar topics), Honors Economics, and I have a Netflix documentary addiction.

Since I self studied, I have no idea about the class, and my school doesn’t offer it.

As for the test, Lots of vocabulary. I would go onto quizlet and find vocab from a text book that you are not using or a review book. This will help supplement whatever your textbook lacks. When it comes down to it, I think studying the vocab alone can get you a 3-4.

Also, Know the models. Due to the procrastination, I confused two models on one of the essays.

The test is also heavily curved. I took the AP US Government, test and class, and got a 4 (not complaining). I felt like I knew more, but the test wasn’t heavily curved, and one of my essays was a complete shot in the dark.

I think you should be fine for the class. The fact that you are posting this before you even started school shows that you are on top of things.

Hope this helped.

I’m psyched for this class. My teacher for this class also taught me AP US History last year and is teaching me AP Psychology this year, so I’ve definitely got an advantage with knowing teaching styles.

As far as the actual course goes, having a background in APUSH and taking AP Gov/Macro simultaneously should help.

best review books?

Well hello! I’m taking AP Human Geography this year

I have a question. In the Barron’s review book, there’s some things that have different names than in my textbook. Is this a big deal?

I’m thinking of self-studying for this. Which books would be best?

@waitinginthehall‌ Either the Barron’s or Princeton Review should be sufficient  I can email you the powerpoints and worksheets my teacher makes if you want!

Hello! I took this class last year, and I got a 5 on the exam. A fair warning to those who think it may be a cakewalk, it isn’t one anymore. It was fairly challenging on the MC and FRQ, especially the one where you had to compare Rostow and some other dude’s model together, over 35% of the people who took it got 0/7 points on it. It’s a really fun class, but not as easy as it use to be!

^^^^^^^

I’m kind of scared for the exam, it’s coming up in a few months x.x

If we’re actually reviving this, I have a question: what review book is best for covering general topics (map types, gravity model, etc), population distribution, migration, religion and language? I came in at 2nd semester, so I’ve been catching up on those units while working through our current ones as well. I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on those topics, but I want a good review on those sections to really reinforce my understanding

I bought both the Barron’s and Princeton Review book to study for the exam. While I have the class, we are only on unit 3, and we are definitely behind. I found Barron’s to be most helpful for the class’ purposes because the information was laid out in a very organized way however Princeton was definitely tied with it. I feel they both compliment eachother very well and has helped me understand the concepts. I’d recommend either one to be honest. My class uses De Blij and I find it to be boring but I guess I have to pull through and read it

How far are you guys in your classes? We just started Urban Geography and still have the Agriculture unit left. My teacher doesn’t really teach so I’m going to learn it all from Barron’s.

@TP2000‌
My class is literally just starting Unit 4 the political boundaries one. The AP Exam is in less than 2 months

Just started self studying woohoo! Probably a little late to the game but this stuff is so interesting! I’m using REA crash course, Barron’s, and Princeton review. Tbh a lot of the exam is just memorization and common knowledge imo. Best of luck!

Started self studying couple weeks ago and almost done with the Barron’s book. What books are you guys using for an overall review?

I’m using Barron’s as my teacher hasn’t taught me anything.

Hey everyone! I have a less-than-stellar APHG teacher, the exam is almost exactly a month from now, and I’m going to buy a prep book really soon… I’m thinking of getting Barron’s… Is the latest edition the 5th one?
(Also, a bit random but: Do you have to have the most recent edition of the prep book to do well on the exam? I have an old 2011 edition of Princeton Review’s book and the REA book that my brother and sister used (she used it 3 years later) and they both got 5’s… Should I still get a 2015 edition?)

So I took the princeton review practice test and got a very high 5 (84% on the multiple choice, about 70% on the essays.)

But I was wondering is the real thing basically the same? Like if I did really good on the practice test, do I really need to do much studying?

If you got that high of a 5 you’re probably good, but you can take a real practice test if you want.
