I got my schedule today, and I'm pretty upset about it. As of now, pretty much all my close friends have 7th period lunch. That period, I'm scheduled to take AP Italian--it's the only period that the class is offered. I've got 3rd period lunch--aka 9:50 AM. However, if I was to take AP Statistics instead of AP Italian, there's a good probability I could change my schedule to accomodate having 7th period lunch.

So here's the background info. I've been taking Italian since 7th grade (5 total years at this point, but do colleges include middle school in counting the years of a language?) The AP Italian teacher is horrible, as is our school's preparation for the language exams. The class will be a joke, since its well-known that no one scores above a 3, and even a 3 is rare. Statistics, on the other hand, is a better class that people get 5s in. Plus, I'm looking at being a math major at this point.

Will colleges look down upon me for taking AP Stat over AP Italian? I really want to enjoy my senior year....

Also, suppose I could take AP Italian as an independent study. How would that factor into the whole college admissions view?

P.S. I'm already taking AP Calculus BC, AP Stat would be in addition to that.

I hate to say it but come Thanksgiving of your Freshman year, you'll view your "best friends" a lot differently -- i.e. they just won't seem so vital to your life like they do now. Take the AP Italian course and blow it out.

Don't independent study a foreign language. It won't turn out well, no matter how intelligent you are. You will mess up pronounciations, you won't necessarily learn every exception, etc, etc. It's just a really bad thing to self study. My brother tried self-studying AP Spanish and failed miserably. He ended up pulling four days of all-nighters (long story).

You could look for an online class or something, though.

take the AP stats & luch w/ friends, and do an independent study of AP italian lang. HOWEVER, if you can't do an independent study (w/ a teacher) then you should take AP italian.

if you have 3 years of a foreign language, that's enough. Drop the Italian, take it either at a CC or when you get to college. I agree with the posters above that once you start college you'll have moved past these friends. However, and this is a big however, that's in the future. Life is not lived in the future, it's lived in the present. Even if someday you move past these friends, this next year they'll be helpful and supportive as you pick colleges, apply, and just go about the general business of being a 12th grader.

I might be in the minority here but an AP for an AP seems like a fair trade. I think the important thing is how much do you want to take Italian? I took the AP exam and got a 3, which I'm actually very proud of-the exam is hard and I understand the language pretty well. If you're more of a math person I'd take stat, which I also happened to take and get a 5. However, in our school, the stat work was over 7 hours a week and I came to regret taking the course, even though I like math. Overall, make the decision that weighs everything against each other and don't foresake your friends yet.

You've already had enough Italian. If you're going into a math major, AP Statistics will be much more useful, even if it's lots easier. Plus, you won't learn much if you learn from a bad teacher; it might be better to self study in that case.

Having a good social life and a healthy eating schedule is almost as (if not more) important than doing well academically. Having lunch at around 2:00pm is way better than having it as early as 9:50am, though it should ideally be close to noon. Your social and physical health can vastly affect your academic well-being.

Yea, I agree with excelblue. I don't really see the point of taking AP Italian if your teacher sucks, and you've already taken 5 years of Italian (even if your grades and stuff don't show up, colleges will at least see that you started at like Italian 2 or 3 in your freshman year, right?).

Take AP Stats (apparently if you have a good teacher, the AP exam is a joke), and also, force yourself to keep studying Italian on your own so that you can take that AP exam in May as well.

It wouldn't look right for you to take five years of a language and then just drop it cold. If you score well enough on the AP exam (actually in many cases, a 3 on language is sufficient), you might test out of the language requirement for your college. Plus you'd likely also test out of the stats requirement, if there is one. Even better for you!

As a parent, I am voting for Stat and lunch. Stat is a fine class, and a useful subject, if taught well. And, why shouldnt you enjoy your friends company this last year of school.

For goodness sakes, what on earth is your school thinking of? lunch at 10am?
